It is a proven fact that anyone can learn to increase reading speed with the determination to improve, the desire to try different techniques, and the will to practice. The rate at which you read can only be increased if you understand what you are reading. You will only require good vocabulary and comprehension skills in order to increase reading speed.

When you learn to speed read, it is important to increase the speed at which you read without lowering the ability to comprehend the material. If you read faster but do not understand what it is that you are reading, you really have not made any improvement at all. You will need to learn to read faster while comprehending what you have read, and most adults can learn to do this.

You will find that many things can contribute to a slower speed of reading. If you do not practice reading, your speed will be much slower, as will the fear of not understanding the material you are reading. Regression is another problem that causes slower reading speed. Regression is when you are re-reading things needlessly, whether it is unconsciously or not.

You may be limited in your ability to read word to word, or you could possibly have trouble recognizing certain words. Some readers have problems with their eye movement. If your eye movement is faulty you could have trouble keeping your eyes focused on where you are reading; your eyes may want to roam all over the page. This can make for slower reading habits.

When trying to improve reading speed, there are four steps you should follow. Your first step will be to have an eye exam. The next step is to stop pronouncing words while you are reading. Thirdly, if you concentrate on the key words and the ideas that are meaningful in what you are reading you will be able to make yourself read at a faster pace. For the fourth and final step, you have to stop regressing. Regressing means you are re-reading everything you have just read. It is pointless and it slows you down.

To increase reading speed, here are a few tips to follow. The first thing you should do is go over the reading material: take a quick look at the headings, the chapter names, and the relevance of the material. Try to increase the speed at which you are reading while trying this. When you need to understand a certain section, then slow down your reading speed. When you are reading over parts that are familiar or that you will not need to remember or know, you can read faster. When reading a line, try to take in a lot of words at once, not just read word for word.

By practicing these techniques, you should be able to increase reading speed while still taking in the full meaning of what you're reading.
