Increasing productivity to give you more time for the things that matter most
60Working from home and having constant access to the Internet can be a recipe for disaster for most people! The key to work at home success is increasing your productivity and managing your time well. Ever heard of the 80/20 principle? The 80/20 principle suggests that most people do 80% of their work in 20% of their time. This is especially true for work at home professionals!
So, how do you increase your productivity to give you more time to spend doing the things you love with the people you love? Read on for my top 5 tips for a productive work at home professional!
1. Stop multitasking! Whether you grew up in the multitasking generation or not (think text messaging, Facebook, and email), multitasking does one thing – it makes you LESS productive!
It may be tempting to eat your cereal while you conduct a phone meeting while you answer your emails and usher your kids out the door, but it’s not! To be truly focused and thus increase your work productivity, you need to make an effort to break all of your tasks up so you can focus your energy on one thing at a time.
By doing this, you’ll find that you complete each task more efficiently while maintaining your sanity at the same time!
2. Eliminate distractions! This includes phone calls and unannounced visits from family and friends who don’t really understand the concept that your work from home job is exactly that – a real job that shouldn’t have to weather distractions throughout the day!
A major distraction for many work at home professionals, especially parents, is household chores. You may hate doing the dishes and then be surprised how much you’d like to tackle them when you’re in a procrastinating mood! Put chores out of your mind when you’re working, and do everything you can to eliminate distractions during your work hours.
3. Avoid web distractions! This means not keeping your email program open all day long and committing to checking it only at set points throughout the day. Opening, reading, and responding to emails whenever they pop up is a great way to procrastinate the tasks at hand, so beware of unproductively if you insist on checking your email every five minutes!
The same theory goes for web surfing. Limit your work-time web surfing only to tasks that require you to do legitimate research! Google is an amazing tool, but surfing the web all day will not help you get anything done, let along make any money!
4. Set regular work hours! Of course, one of the beautiful things about working from home is the ability to finally have a flexible work schedule. However, you’ll find that if you don’t set at least semi-regular work hours, you’ll be unfocused and having to work at all hours of the day to get your tasks done!
Furthermore, if you’re emailing and calling clients outside of “regular” business hours, your clients will think that you’re a workaholic and therefore open to receiving calls from them at any time of the day or night! Not what you were hoping for when you started working from home? Set hours and stick to them!
5. Prioritize tasks! Each day, make a list of what you need to do the following day so you can easily segue into productivity mode the first moment you step into your “office” each morning. It’s also smart to keep an ongoing list of deadlines and important tasks, including anything that’s non-billable work such as filing or invoicing clients.
One thing that to do in order to get your most important tasks done is to set yourself deadlines days (for smaller projects) or weeks (for larger projects) in advance. This helps you stick to a schedule and allows you for flex time to improve or revise the project with a fresh perspective, right before your real deadline occurs.
If you follow these simple guidelines, you’ll find that your work from home job can become more profitable and more importantly, more rewarding, giving you the time and energy to spend on what matters most in your life!
