My, What Green Eyes You Have

I haven't seen the movie yet, but the effects look incredible. Friends have already asked how they get the Incredible Hulks eyes to look like they did.

I was not involved in movie at all, but I have done contact lenses for other movies in the past and thought I could answer this question. It is a bit of stretch from my normal "eye care" writings, but it is still somewhat related and probably interesting to most.

The answer is with theatrical lenses, also known as Halloween contact lenses. These are not your regular Acuvue color lenses, these lenses are designed and painted specifically for this movie and for this character.

Blue to Bright Green

Notice Edward Norton has light blue eyes with a dark band around the iris (called a limbal ring)

Making Blue Eyes Green

In the image while David Banner is mid transformation shows a very light and luminescent green. Also notice the texture that is displayed on the iris.

(The iris is the colored portion of the eye, in this case the lenses give the appearance of a green iris.)

In reality Edward Norton has light blue eyes with fairly distinct limbal ring.

(limbal ring is the dark ring that surrounds the iris, most of us have one)

Notice on the lenses how this ring is not there anymore (while Banner is changing in to the Hulk). The effect here implies a period of change. Had the ring been there, it would not give the transitional effect the directors were probably after.

As far as the lens, this indicates to me that they used a fully opaque very light green lens with a hand painted, textured iris.

The black center is actually Norton's pupil. Most all colored contact lenses have a clear center of about 4-5mm, on the eye this opening is lined up over the pupil so the actor can see, and it looks very realistic. (as you can see in the photo).

Once the full transformation is made to the incredible hulk, they eyes are a bit different. Notice they are darker and have a dark limbal ring? I think that is all digital effect, because I don't know how the hulk could actually put on a contact lens. (ok, bad joke...)

A Word Of Caution Regarding Theatrical Lenses

There a lot of fun colored contact lenses out there, everything from lenses to change your eye color, or lenses to enhance your limbal ring. Theatrical lenses are in a different league. They are usually hand painted and not designed to be disposable. Which means they

  1. cost more and
  2. require you to take impeccable care of them

Misusing any contact lens can have serious repercussions. But that does not mean they are out of reach. Currently in the United States anyone who wants to wear any type of contact lens must be fit by a contact lens specialist. That's right, just as with anything, there are contact lens specialists in the world. (That was my title for many many years. we fit contact lenses all day every day.) So seeing a lens fitter not as big of a deal as many seam to think.

A Sampling of Theatrical Lenses

This is a small sample of hand painted theatrical lenses provided by Marrietta Vision. (Also contact lens specialists...)

When you are fit by an eye care provider you can be confident about a couple key factors.

  1. Nobody else has worn your lenses (ie. do not buy them at a flea market)
  2. They should fit and not cause damage to your eyes
  3. The care system you are given is compatible with you lenses
  4. Your eyes are healthy enough to wear them to begin with
  5. Proper care and handling instruction are provided

So the bottom line is, David Banner is most likely using soft opaque green, theatrical grade contact lenses during that scene.

And if you want to have eyes like his, you probably can. But ask your eye care professional first.

Theatrical Lenses With A Correction

A lot of people want to know if these types of theatrical contact lenses can also correct vision like a normal pair of contacts. Some do and some don't. It depends on the style, common halloween lenses like wild eyes do come with vision correction, but not much and not for complicated prescriptions (such as astigmatism). And if you need multifocal contact lenses, forget it. You will still need reading glasses over your distance correction. Theatrical lenses are not designed to help you read the newspaper. They are designed to help you spook your friends!
