Incredible Tornado Picture Captured on Camera
66
This picture was taken in Orchard in Mitchell County, Iowa last Tuesday night. There was heavy rain along with golf-ball size hail and lasted for about 10 minutes. Immediately thereafter there was severe thunderstorm with heavy lightning.
At 9:04 pm a tornado was approaching Orchard, Lori Mehmen was able to capture this heavy tornado funnel just before she took cover. The twister briefly hit the ground and took off into the air. There were extensive tree and crop damage, but luckily no deaths or injuries were reported. Lori is a brave individual to take this incredible picture. Like Gizmodo says it is better to keep the camera handy, we will never know when moments like this come.Share it! — Rate it: up down [flag this hub]

Dottie I agree it is a beautiful and scary one at the same time. We don't get much tornadoes here in Carolina.
Remind me to stay the hell out of Iowa.
You got me a little worried about tornadoes dear brother. I checked the fact sheet from the cambridge emergency management department in Massachusetts. Tornadoes are not as frequent in MA as they are in the south and the midwest but all residents should be aware as they can happen here and if they should happen they present severe dangers.
Coming from Oklahoma, tornado-alley of USA, I thought I'd seen all the most amazing tornado photos ever...but that one's incredible!!! And to Dottie1, I've been in basements...and they'll save your life, but not your belongings. At least in Oklahoma, the weather services on local news the best in the country. TV Weathermen are the Gods of Oklahoma! They've saved thousands of lives with their technology and committments!
Wow, it almost doesn't look real.
Wow we had a mini tornado go though our suburb last week thank god it didnt look like that . Great photo
jeezuz I sure would not be that close I'd be looooong gooone. Really good pic, and scary...thats for sure. thanks
that is truely amazing lucky they got away on that one more on Iowa flood desasters http://hubpages.com/hub/Evacuation-of-thousands-Io here you can see pictures of the floods first hand thanks cgu ~cool~ cya
Thank you all for your comments.
I once had the rare & scary privilege of seeing a funnel cloud pass over our house in Roselle, IL.
As for tornadoes occurring anywhere, I actually saw a water spout that came ashore in Venice, Italy, and a tornado that struck my wife's village in Spain.
I hope it has not been "touched-up" in any way because thats the best picture i have ever seen of a tornado! deffientlly an lowahhoa!!
Chef Jeff, hope nobody was injured, the closest one was had to live through one night of Hurricane with severe winds, I slept through the night and left it to god :)
Compu-Smart, it is really scary. In Google Images I saw similar pictures http://tinyurl.com/6ysyzm and one from NASA they look scary as well. http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/0506/tornado_nguye
What can I say but that is an incrediable picture. Not a good thing but it really gives the quickness at a glance of how it can drop to the ground. One would wonder "how can this be?" I am so sorry for all that you guys are going through. Again I need to mention another FEMA job. Really supports and insures their job security!!!
My prayers are certainly with you ...my best to all.
Sweet!, Thanks for the links!
I'm just glad i can appreciate these beautiful images without actually experiencing it first hand!!
Wow, that is one amazing picture and it's good that no one died or got injured. I agree with "Lori," it is good to have a camera at all times. I guess that's why they make cameras on cellphones!
Nobody was hurt in the funnel that I witnessed that day, but a lot of things were tossed around the area!
Furthermore there were two girls who were friends of mine that had to hold on to a metal post and I swear they were flying like flags in the wind!

That has got to be the picture of the year. You won't see me taking a picture of a tornado. I'll be in the basement with Toto. Dorothy (my birthname) P.S. I just finished reading a hub about tomotoes (yes we have no tomotoes by Marisuewrites) from tomatoes to tornadoes. What's next?
