The Incredible Art Of Julian Beever!
93The Artist
Julian Beever is an English chalk artist who has been creating chalk drawings on pavement since the mid-1990s that create the illusion of three dimensions when viewed from the right location. These trompe-l'oeil drawings are created using a projection called anamorphosis and appear to defy the laws of perspective.

Many of his creations are optical illusions, such as this one, where Julian appears to be perched on a ledge, waiting for Batman and Robin to climb the building and rescue him.
In reality, there is just pavement in front of him, and the street below together with the expectant crowd, plus the blazing building below him, are all tricks played on the eye (a modern example of trompe l'oeil - a French term that means literally 'trick the eye').
An absolutely insane chalk drawing on the pavement. Batman an Robin are going to save a man from a burning building. Don't you get high anxiety when you look at this drawing ? Note the level of details : the real pavement is actually casting a "shadow" on the buildings below it.

Some images of the street drawing
on the Flickr site are attributed to
Julian Beever when the actual artist
is Kurt Wenner (www.kurtwenner.com).
You’ll notice that Kurt’s artwork has
a much more classical flavor to it than
Julian’s. That being said, both artists
are incredibly talented. You can also

We invite Graphic Artists worldwide to submit works of "Graffiti & Street Art" for the 2008 WORLD VENICE BEACH International WORLD GRAFFITI/STREET ART EXHIBITION & FESTIVAL Saturday, March 29, 2008 to Sunday, April 6, 2008NOW:Grand Artist BEST OF FESTIVAL PRIZE: $25,000.00 Cash Award!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Official MEDIA SPONSOR: ANTIKULTURE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VENICE BEACH was home to one of the most famous and innovative GRAFFITI PITS in the World and the great Graffiti Wall still stands today!
Since the late 1970's, artists have been adorning the walls and the now former courtyard on Venice Beach. It is now regulated with a Permit system and monitored by the City of Los Angles. But the free artistic spirit lives on.
In honor of this long tradition and to honor one of the most original pioneers of "Public Art" in New York City's Lower East Side, Nolita, SOHO and Alphabet City area: "SAMO" the legendary Graffiti who grew into a renowned International pop artist NYC's: JEAN MICHEL BASQUIAT.
The 2008 WORLD GRAFFITI/STREET ART EXHIBITION & FESTIVAL
will be a comprehensive, NINE DAY FESTIVAL that will put the independent art forms associated with "Graffiti", or "Writing", and "Street Art" in the "Fine Arts" realm to the public.
The artists will be presented to the, mainstream Los Angeles Art establishment, as well as the Regional and National press, as the accomplished and competent experts that the best of these artists are. In a growing, complex program like the 2008 VENICE BEACH GRAFFITI/STREET ART FESTIVAL some variants have to be excepted and recognition of the many forms of artistic expression that this combination of styles is creating - world-wide. The 2008 VENICE BEACH GRAFFITI/STREET ART FESTIVAL value is that it's exposure in the media and it's business tie-in's will garner new artists much needed publicity and exposure that would take years to achieve individually, if at all.
"Graffiti" is still not thought of as "Real Art" by many in the art world. There needs to be clear distinctions made between real artists who create in various styles associated with "Graffiti", and people who just "Tag" walls and doors in the night with their nick-names for personal reasons.
STREET ART, is a growing and widely inclusive field, and the artists who participate in this Festival in Venice Beach will be the artists who the Los Angeles, California and American art establishment hear of as important to know, see and buy. Professional art is a business as well as a discipline. This Festival will put new people on the Art World Radar and give an enormous boost to their commercial viability.
A celebration and introduction of the vibrant and inventive, worldwide movement of GRAFFITI/STREET ARTS.
2008 WORLD VENICE BEACH International WORLD GRAFFITI/STREET ART EXHIBITION & FESTIVAL
Nine Days, (Tentatively scheduled for) Saturday, March 29, 2008 to Sunday, April 6, 2008.

And, the worlds largest "Live - Graffiti/Street Art Creation" on both Saturday's of this incredible Arts Festival. Original works on 72"X72" Flat Boards or strecthed Canvas.
MISS & Mr. VENICE BEACH will be chosen in a mid-day Press Ceremony.

Awesome art work!!!
awesome art - great hub
Wonderful, truly amazing!
I have seen these images on the internet and have been fascinated as to the content and overall work of the artist. As a painter I find this medium interesting. So much work is involved and the results are not permanent! That would bother me! As to others comments on overall content of the artwork, artwork is a protected right. Let us not infrige upon that!
the work on these paintings is amazing. to know that the artist is only using chalk and a sidewalk is amazing. i don't know of anyone else who could do such a thing. the details used are so fine that you actually believe you might fall in, or step on someone, or anything. i am an artist, i prefer to draw landscapes, and i am no professional, but exceptional. i love the way all of these drawings come out. i only wish i could have one done for me... : ) thank you for bringing people such amazement and entertainment. what would the world be without art?
superrr
