You most likely found this page because you are looking for “Independence Car Insurance”. My guess is that you are looking for local car insurance Independence MO agents. Before you start getting quotes from your local agents or from anyone or anywhere else, it can be helpful to know your minimum car insurance requirements so that you can try to stay as close to them as possible. In Independence, Missouri the only two types of insurance that you are required to have by law is liability coverage in the form of 25/50/10 and uninsured/underinsured coverage.

Keep in mind that liability coverage does not cover you in accident, but those around if you happen to be at fault in an accident. If you are found at fault, you are liable for other people’s expenses (hence the term liability coverage). What does 25/50/10 stand for? In other words, you must have at least $25,000 in bodily injury liability for one person in an accident, $50,000 in bodily injury liability for all people in an accident, and $10,000 in property damage liability. Bodily injury pays for medical expenses, income lost, and/or pain and suffering. Property damage liability pays for damage done to other cars as well as fixed property such as fences, telephone polls, or bus shelters. 25/50/10 is the required amount of coverage, but is it enough to have? Let’s pretend that you get the minimum. You get into an accident with a BMW in which you are found to be at fault. The cost to repair this BMW is $20,000. Because your property damage liability is only $10,000, your are responsible for paying the remaining $10,000. If you can’t pay these $10,000, your assets are at risk because you have a chance of being sued. In more serious accident, you can be liable for very expensive medical expenses. As such, it is recommended by insure.com that you have around 100/300/50 in liability coverage. Although your premiums will be higher the closer you get to or exceed 100/300/50, having such a policy can really bail you out in the future.

Aside from liability coverage, when shopping for car insurance in Independence MO, you are also required to have uninsured/underinsured coverage. If you happen to get into an accident with an uninsured/underinsured driver who is at-fault in an accident and they don’t have enough bodily injury liability to pay for you and your passengers medical expenses, you can sure them. However, if you have uninsured/underinsured coverage, you don’t need to worry about uninsured/underinsured drivers because this type of inexpensive coverage covers any difference between what you are owed and how much they can pay you (whether it is a result of them being uninsured or underinsured). This type of coverage also covers bodily injury sustained in a hit-run-accident or as a pedestrian.

Although liability and uninsured/underinsured coverage are the only two types of insurance required, there are other things to consider..
