What is the Indus River?

The Indus River is a major southern Asian waterway, originating in Tibet, the Indus then follows about 1,900 through India as well as Pakistan and then on to the Arabian Sea, which is a part of the Indian Ocean. Kashmir is the only section of India where the Indus River traverses.

The origin of the Indus is the heights of the Himalayas, where it is a fomenting torrent by the contributions of melt-water and torrential rains. When it enters the Punjab plain in Pakistan, the river changes, becoming sluggish and snakelike meandering. West of Bahawalpur the Indus is merged with its chief tributary, the Panjnad, constituted by the conjunction of the Chenab and Sutlej rivers.

In history, the Indus is highly significant, being known for the ancient civilization that prospered in the valley as long ago as 2300 B.C.
