Boston Terriers are one of oldest breeds of dogs originating in the United States. They are a descendant of the English Bulldog and the English White Terrier. They can be referred to as Boston Bulls, Boxwoods, and Boston Terriers. While they can be plagued by health problems, they are loving, gentle, and very intelligent dogs.
Appearance
The American Kennel Club considers the color patterns of this particular breed to be one of the most significant distinctions when choosing the best in show. They are judged in the non-sporting group and not considered by the AKC to be terriers. They are a short haired, small breed dog, not usually weighing more than twenty five pounds. They are no taller than a toddler aged child. They are most often a shade of brown or black with a white coat on their underbelly. They have a short snout and short stout legs.
Personality and Health
They are a docile breed of dogs. Though originally bred to fight, they are mostly known to be playful, energetic, and great with children. They are an intelligent breed, and it is very easy to teach Boston Terriers dog obedience commands.
Boston Terriers have some health concerns that should be addressed by you and a veterinarian before choosing one as your pet. They are known to experience sight problems such as cataracts and cherry eye. These can affect your pet’s vision as early as their younger years. They are known to have allergies, heart murmurs, and sometimes knee problems that can cause trouble with the back.They are a wonderful dog to add to your family as an indoor companion. They require a minimum amount of exercise to maintain good physical health. Though they love to play outdoors, they are very sensitive to extreme cold and heat. They should not be considered as an outdoor friend if your climate changes to either of these harsh conditions throughout the year.Miscellaneous Information
Boston Terriers are a loved pet among many and can make a loving addition to your home. They have seen owners such as former United States President Warren G. Harding, and have even been promoted to the rank of Sergeant during World War I. They are the mascots of colleges like Georgetown and Boston University. And they have been named the official state dog of Massachusetts.
