Ingemar Bergman

Ingemar Bergman is unique in the Swedish film history with his long career in film making, most striking is perhaps that his films, in the midst of their originality, managed to integrate the whole history of film from the silent movie era onwards through the decades and right up to the present.
The 1940's was a decade of experimentation, early films like Crisis, Prison and Thirst, are particularly brilliant. Here he tries methods that he will return to in later films. You can very well say that the 40's are the key to Bergman's breakthrough.
When Bergman in the 60's discovered the island of Fårö, the landscape already had inspired him to make films such as Sawdust and Tinsel and The Seventh Seal. These films are whitout competition two of the greatest ever made.
This is also the decade when Bergman separates himself from the rest of the world whit films like Winter Light , the Silence, Persona, Hour of the Wolf. These were extremely provoking works; it is no coincidence that Bergman premières in these years regularly lead to exited debates in the media.
Then came the finale, in1981/1982 when with Fanny and Alexander Bergman officially announced his farewell to all filming, a promise he kept with the exception of a handful of shorter films.
