Ingredients That Cause Acne Formation
79Acne
Battling acne is hard at times. There are an increasing number of us who are now not only battling acne but are also battling wrinkles as well. One of the most important things you can do is to make sure that you are not putting any cosmetics on your skin that are actually contributing to more acne forming. The majority of cosmetics on the market contain ingredients that cause acne to form. These ingredients are not necessarily a problem in a lipid dry skin.
Oleic Acid is one of the biggest contributors to acne. Oleic Acid is also known as Omega 9. It can be syntheticall produced but also occurs in the majority of vegetable oils as well. Omega 9 is a fatty acid but it's benefits lie in internal use not external use.
Unless the acne sufferer totally eliminates these ingredients from the products they are using they will NEVER get rid of their acne.
The discovery that certain products, including cosmetics were causing acne eruptions became evident during the Second World War. People who were working with polychlorinated hydrocarbons developed comedones similar to that of acne.
In 1968 a procedure was developed which used the rabbit ear was an indicator of the comedogenic abilities of individual ingredients. Applying the ingredients to the rabbits ear led to acne like eruptions on the rabbits ear. It is from this discovery that they were able to identify what ingredients were causing acne.
Below is a list of ingredients that have been shown to cause acne. This is sourced from a scientific paper from Monroe Lanzet, cosmetic chemist. They are the correlation of data from several independent cosmetic manufacturers in the United States.
Vegetable Oils - The majority of vegetable oils are comedogenic to skin. The disappointing thing is that most therapists are not made aware of this, and certainly natural skin care companies are oblivious to it.

You almost feel like you need to carry a dictionary with you to make sure you don't purchase cosmetics with these ingredients in.
Just because a cosmetic says it is oil free does not make it acne free. Non-comedogenic is also not regualted and anyone can say it and it does not ,mean there product will not give you acne. You need to purchase acne safe skin care.

Hi Staci-Barbo,
Yes there are ranges that are ok for acne. When I mean they are ok, I mean they do not contain ingredients that exacerbate acne. This does not mean they will correct the problem of acne however. It just means they will not make it any worse than it is. To correct acne you need to kill the bacteria, get rid of the excess dead skin cells, inhibit the enzyme 5a reductase which is the hormonal cause (very few products address this factor of it), and reduce oil flow.
Obviously I would recommend Eclogite as that was the reason I started my product in the first place. I couldn't find anything that worked and did not cause acne. I tried Dermalogica and it did nothing for me. That is not to say that others have had success but I didn't.
Dermalogica does not contain any ingredients however that cause acne. They do however contain ingredients that cause pigmentation. The choice is yours however on that count.
You need to be careful about foundations as well. There are a lot that cause acne. The one I use is Lancome Teint Idole. It does not cause acne.
Other ones that don't contain comedogenic ingredients are:
Garnier Synergie Fresh Moisturising Fluid
Proactive
Paula's Choice Non Greasy Lotion
Skinceuticals Daily Moisturiser
These are some of the ones that are ok. I am actually in the process of writing a book about acne and which cosmetics are safe and which are not. Partly because I am sick of us being sold flawed products. Companies do not seem to care. There are also alternatives to these ingredients that do not cause acne, so there is no need to use them.

This is the information I have been looking for. How do I purchase your products
Hi,
Available through www.eclogiteskincare.com
I am also in the process of looking for affiliates for my product. If you have a look on youtube under Eclogiteskincare there is also another comment from a customer in America. She has been using my products and now is completely acne free. Don't take my word though check it out.
If you would love to order I would love to help you
Jacine
Thanks, I just placed my order!
Wow, I've been reading labels since I found your site. The acne causing ingredients are in almost everything, even the expensive Perricone MD clear skin cream I had been using. No wonder it's been such a struggle to clear up my acne. Thank you so much for the information; I will definately pass it along. I can't wait to read your book when it's finished! Thank you for putting the pieces together so that others will not have to continue blindly trying products.
Thanks bubbles 123 for your comments. Acne is something I have always felt strongly about. I have suffered acne since I was 14 and I will still breakout if I use something I shouldn't like sunscreen. I love summer holidays but hate the acne associated with it as I am still looking for a sunscreen that does not cause acne.
Will keep you posted on my book when it comes out.
Hi! I would love for you to review my products and give me your feedback. My acne is gone since using this fabulous product I am now using. I am into beauty products and was always sold on the cute bottles and brand name until I found my current product. I am not happy with the design on the bottle however I love what is in it! So much for judging a book by it's cover. I have an attachment I can send you in an email with the products and ingredients listed. I appreciate your time. Great video :) You can reach me at clean.pure@live.com
Hi Kim,
Thanks for your comments. I have emailed you so I am looking forward to hearing about the products you are using. My book will be about all products that are good and bad for acne. It will be good to know about other products that are available.
I would have to disagree with some of the statements about vegetable oils. I have struggled since I was 10 years old with acne. When I started using Noirliliana's Skincare my acne practically disappeared. I may see one tiny pimple in a month or two and that is always around my time of the month. By not using artifical ingredients and using pure essential oils, vegetable oils and butters my skin is glowing, not tight, not greasy and finally clear. She can make me a lotion fresh with no chemicals if I want every time I purchase. I understand that each individual is different though. Some acne suffers are stricken with this condition strictly from hormone imbalances. While others are suffering from food allergies causeing the acne. Still from continued use of pure plant based ingedients from Noirliliana I have seen vast improvement in my skin's condition. I look more youthful, my skin looks like it should have looked when I was young. No more acne flare-ups or red blotchy skin. Simply going natural works better then anything I have ever used.
Hi Jennifer,
I am glad you have found something that works for you. Not all vegetable oils are bad, however the ones listed above are high in Oleic Acid, which is Omega 9. Oleic Acid has been shown scientifically to cause excess skin cells, and that is the number one reason for acne. This is published, peer reviewed studies in the British Journal of Dermatology.
Not everything synthetic is bad and not everything natural is good either. You may or may not be aware that Lavender for instance is an allergen and actually makes you burn quicker because it contains a substance called coumarin. Google it if you like.
There is a very faulty misconception that natural products are superior to synthetic and are inherently safer. This is not the case for allergic and acne prone skins.
I personally find natural products a nightmare for my allergies, and so do a lot of other consumers. I only use Aromatherapy in one product as most of them contain allergens which are a problem for sensitive skins. There are 26 allergens listed on the European Cosmetics Directive and 16 of them are contained in just about every essential oil.
If you have found a natural product that works for you then stick with it.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and comments too.
Hi, very interesting stuff here. I did a rundown of my facial regimine products and discovered cetearyl alcohol and ceteareth -20 in my non comedogenic, derm recommended oil free cetaphil moisturizing lotion. I use this twice a day, could this make my acne worse, or prevent my face from clearing up? Also, ive been prescribed Tretinoin cream .025% and noticed it has isopropyl myristate in it. why would my dermatologist prescibe me it, if it causes acne? Also he said it may intalially cause more pimples but after 12 weeks it should clear up. Any Advice?? Should i switch moisturizers? Stop using tretinoin cream? Are these ingredients 100% sure to cause acne, or does these ingredients MAY cause acne, does it depend on the individual? Sorry for all the questions, but im so confused right now? Thank you for your time and video!
Hi Tony,
I understand your confusion...why would a Doctor give you something that is causing acne to clear your acne up.
To Answer your questions - yes Cetaphil is not a good choice for acne sufferers.
Cetaphil® Moisturizing Lotion
Ingredients : Purified Water, Glycerin, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Cetearyl Alcohol (and) Ceteareth-20, Macadamia Nut Oil, Dimethicone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Stearoxytrimethylsilane (and) Stearyl Alcohol, Panthenol, farnesol, Benzyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Acrulates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrulate Crosspolymer, Sodium Hydroxide, Citric Acid.
The issue is the Ceateareth 20 and also the Macadamia Oil. Ceteareth 20 causes acne and Macadamia Oil is high in Oleic and Palmitoleic Acid. Both of which cause acne.
This moisturiser is not a good choice long term.
With regards to the Roaccutane...that is a hard one. Is your acne from what you have been using or have you always had it. Some people DO NEED Roaccutane so I would not advise stopping it without discussing it with your Doctor.
Yes Isopropyl Myristate does cause acne is anyne who has a miniscule amount of oil on their face. It is not however if you are DRY...which is what eventually the Roaccutane will do to your skin....dry the crap out of it. You will find your mouth as well will get really dry and you will need lip balm.
Vitamin A also causes breakout initially as the receptors for Vitamin A in the skin are deactivated by sun exposure, so when you put a high dose on the skin it irritates the skin initially and you will break out as a result. Your Doctor is right though and it will clear.
If you wish to email me privately I can show you the results that we have achieved with our product...We have had exceptional results particularly with males.
You are talking to a fellow acne sufferer and my motive is simply to help you. Nobody should have to go through what I have gone through
Jacine
Jacine,
Ive found moisturizers online that do not contain any of the listed ingredients(at least not exactly simular to the listed ingredients):
http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/catalog/shop_product_det
other than this moisturizer, i dont believe there is any on the market without any of these ingredients.
The soap I use is Cetaphil gentle cleansing bar. Which has none of the listed ingredients. Im also take 10000iu of Vit A, 1000iu of Vit E and 125mg of Zinc a day for 8 weeks. And obviously the Tretinoin Cream .025%, and DID use the cetaphil moisturizer, but i will throw that away tomarrow. What moisturizer can i use?? what is ur email? Thanks so much for your help.
Hi Tony,
The Neutrogena moisturiser you have hyperlinked is perfectly safe and has no issues with it. There are products out there including my own that don't contain acne causing ingredients. You have to remember though that only 30% of acne is cosmetic induced. The other 70% is from an enzyme called 5a reductase. It is responsible for acne formation and also male balding. Eclogite works on reducing 5a reductase formation, effectively stopping breakout at it's source.
Your cleansing bar is fine as well. I would recommend you continue for the moment with your Doctor's treatment. If you do not get the results you want you are always welcome to contact me and I am more than willing to assist you.
The supplements you are taking will also help with your acne. I am assuming you are male because the amount of Vitamin A you are taking would cause birth defects if you were female and got pregnant.
The Zinc is vital for acne and it is also contained in my topical serum for acne.
Thanks for the hyperlink too, as I am writing a book with regards to products that cause acne. It is always good to know a cheap alternative for those who simply have cosmetic acne.
You can email me at jacine@eclogiteskincare.com
The other thing that would help your skin is Vitamin B5. It is responsible for carbohydrate metabolism, and they have found that those people with acne tend to have what they call insulin resisitance. No we are not diabetic but our body does not deal well with high glycaemic index foods. It has been definitely shown that diet does aggravate acne. There was a study done at RMIT in Melbourne here in Australia and it was proven that sugar and chocolate do cause acne formation in those who are prone to it. The myth that diet does not cause acne is FALSE, and yet I still see Doctor's sprouting this information on the web. If you would like a copy of the diet and study let me know and I will email it to you.
I think I need to write more on Hub pages.
Cheers
Jacine

Eclogite, Are there cosmetic lines on the market that you would recommend?
