Inside the 13th Floor Haunted House - The Philadelphia 13 Floors Haunted House Legend
88Inside the Thirteenth Floor Haunted House - The Philadelphia Haunted House Legend
I met a woman once who had not only heard of the thirteenth floor haunted house, but who claimed that she had actually been there. I could see that she wanted to tell me it all, was desperate to share her tale with me, but then she thought better of it, so that all I really learnt about it, was that she’d only made it to the sixth floor, and would go no further.
The real thirteenth floor haunted house is a modern day legend, and the next great horror movie waiting to be made, a haunted house so scary, that should you make it through the 13th floor, you’ll be given your money back, and should you not, well, then who knows what might happen to you.
Whilst there are claims that this thirteen floor haunted house has been spotted all around the world it is most commonly thought to appear in Philadelphia, USA. Some say that once a year on Halloween a certain group of individuals take over a warehouse and convert it into the best haunted house possible, and that the legend was created as nothing more than a great advertising campaign, others claim the thirteenth floor haunted house to be something more, telling of how some who enter through it’s doorways, never leave.
The number 13 has always been a number shrouded in mystery and a cause of panic for some. Triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the number 13, and this phobia is more common than you might suspect, so the fact that this most notorious of haunted houses has thirteen floors will have been no accident.
Friday the 13th is regarded as a day of bad luck all around the world, from England to the Philippines. The association is thought to derive from the fact that Jesus was believed to have been the 13th guest at the last supper.

There are 13 months in the Pagan lunar calendar, in Britain; those who were to be hung walked 13 steps to the noose, Jack the ripper, John Wayne Gacy, Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer and Theodore (Ted) Bundy all have thirteen letters to their names. Many streets do not contain a house number 13 and many airports use ‘12b’ in place of the number 13 at airport gates. Apollo 13 malfunctioned in space having been launched at thirteen minutes past one, or 13:13, making thirteen the most notorious of numbers.
Floor after floor within the thirteenth floor haunted house the terror rises, it is said to start with simple parlour trickery, silly-string and rubber snakes, but with each step things become more real, and more insane. The first floor and you’re laughing and joking, cursing the fool who sold you this tale, the next a little better but still the same old same, the thirds a little gross but you can handle it, no worries, but then things become stranger and weirder, and all of a sudden you’re not entirely sure what’s going on anymore, and few are said to make it past the sixth or seventh, and some of those who do, are never seen again.
To enter the thirteenth floor haunted house you are first required to sign a waiver, signing away any right to make legal claim against those who operate the thirteenth floor haunted house, so that whatever happens within those walls, is between you and the house.
Would you enter the thirteenth floor? and even if you would, where would you find it? nobody knows where the thirteenth floor haunted house is. They say an advert plays on a local Philadelphia radio station just before it opens its doors, to announce its location to those who've been searching, but even if you knew where it was, would you go in?

The Thirteenth Floor - Comments:
Mrvoodoo - where do you find this stuff? Fascinating. A legend you are, never mind the hotel. As for whether I'd go to the hotel ... the answer would be 'no ta'. I like life, and based upon my liking for remain organically mechanical, I'd err on the side of safety and give it a wide berth.
I'm not hugely superstitious by the way. I pay lip service to superstitious mumbo jumbo on occassion - no shoes on the table for eg. But that's only because shoes on any table is nasty - not because I see them as a portent of doom.
Unless you factor in whomever the shoes belong to. They instantly climb to #1 on my hitlist :)
Well, I'd better go back to what I was going to do. Which was make a good coffee then drink it. Have a great weekend - nice to see you up and about so early ;)
Aaaaah, haunting season is here. Nothing better than a haunted hay ride. There are dozens to pick from in southern Michigan. Love it!
I'd stroll right up to the thirteenth floor, then wait for somebody to push me in because I'm absolutely chicken-shit right at the last moment when I do these things...
Great hub. I have an incredible fascination with the macabre. I question whether I would enter, probably not.
Hello Mrvoodoo, first I want to say thank you for your support. Also I became your fan. You are a very good writer. Very nice hub, thanks I have enjoy the reading. Take care and God Bless you.
Ps; I will visit again reading all your hubs.
At a time, I was really 'obsessed' with numerology and symbols, but they just got too commercialized in TV and stuff that I just lost interest. anyways, I think haunted houses aren't what they used to be...I think the demons just got fed up playing dead people...lol
Ive heard of this before. Way back when they used to advertise the location and time on the night of Halloween on the Philly radio station Q102. Calls would come in all night about how people couldn't find it! Appearantly, it was Q102's idea of a hilarious joke! I wonder if they still do it? Either way you wouldn't catch me there!
good work Mr. V. If I ever find the 13th flor, Ill let you know. My mother was born on Friday the 13th btw. Nice hub. Keep up the scary work. ;)
Thanks all for your comments, this is one of my favorite urban legends so I had to share it. It's looking like nobody would enter the 13th floor haunted house, myself included, at least not without somebody much bigger and stronger than I to hold my hand all the way. =)
Halloween is fast approaching though, so keep your eyes open and report back should anybody stumble across it. ;)
Thanks again.
As I guy that has built haunted houses for theme parks, I have heard all of the rumors about the thirteen floor haunted house. I have yet to find it. The number 13 has been very good to me over the years and continues to be lucky for me. Great Hub!
I would enter.... but I don't know how far I could get. Sounds like it would be fun though.
That must be an interesting job Bloodnlatex, it certainly beats mine, and I mean no disrespect when I tell you that you kind of look like you belong in one, with that avatar. =)
It looks like we have a contender, you're leading the way then 'It's Me!!', we'll follow in your foot steps, IF you make it out alive. ;)
I THINK IT IS A GRATE HAUNTED HOUSE I MADE IT TO ALL 13 LAVLES
I'm not going near anything 13 anywhere. :-D Kimberly
I am enjoying these Halloween inspired hubs. I enjoyed reading yours. And the number 13 can also be a good luck number as well. Well, sort of =/
Thanks for the comments all, and happy Halloween (almost). =)
Happy halloween Mr V. I really will write to you if I encounter the 13th floor. I am not afraid. :) If I actively go looking for it, you can come, I will hold your hand. Im big and strong!

Nope, I wouldn't go. Call me a chicken but don't call me a liar on account of this! Funny, in Asia, the number 4 is the most unluckiest of numbers, mainly because the number 4 and the Chinese character for death look identical. You could even trace it to Roman Mythology as the Hades's symbol looks exactly like the number 4...I could go on.
Thanks for mentioning the fact that all of those notorious serial killers had 13 letters in their names and I especially liked the facts pertaining to Apollo 13! Good stuff.
