Insignia GPS NS CNV-10 Connected GPS First Look Review
74Insignia which is Best Buys in house brand has recently released the new Insignia GPS NS CNV-10 Connected GPS. The device is currently priced at $399 from best buy and it is connected to the internet to allow you to have updated points of interest Google searching and traffic information. An interesting feature is also the ability for you to email the locations from Google maps directly to your device.
The device comes with the usually GPS related goodies, so you won't be surprised by anything in the box but you won't be disappointed. The CNV-10 has the standard mount that allows it to be charged directly from the mount or you can charge the CNV-10 from any Mini USB charger that you might have. After you charge up the internal battery of the CNV-10 you have about 2 hours of battery life inside of the device. I use my GPS units on my motorcycle so 2 hours really isn't a lot for me, but for many people who will really never have the device unplugged I am sure that it will be fine.
On the right hand side of the device you have a volume button the sim card slot and the mini-usb plug. The fact that the Sim card is built into the CNV-10 and not into the stand or into the charger is very important. That mean that the CNV-10 will be able to be internet connected even when the device is not connected the base station. I had a Garmin and the only way to use any of the internet based features was to leave the device on the Car Mounting unit. Like I said before I use them on my motor cycle so this was a real let down. Good for Insignia putting this feature into the CNV-10.
Once you boot the device up you are given the standard screen you would have on any GPS device. This is a good thing. We have to remember that any one of these devices are just GPS device in the end. We should really be concerned on how we are going to be getting some place and not distracted with to may other options. I prefer my GPS to be relatively simple and as fast as possible.
The graphics on the device are a bit sub standard if you ask me. The poor CNV-10 was cursed to have an operating system on Windows CE. The graphical capabilities of that software package are a bit limited. So most of your maps and fonts look like they are on a cheep cell phone.
Like I said before the CNV-10 is able to integrate with Google maps so you can send location directly to your device and have them show up in the favorites section of the CNV-10 . This was a feature that at first like are like so what? But if you have a wife that is off traveling without you and has trouble finding a location it is pretty nice to be able to send her a point of interest. Also when it comes to points of interest they are loaded from the Google maps results, which in my opinion the Google maps results for POI simply blow away any of the POI that get loaded from any of the current GPS networks.
One other thing that I love about any connected GPS device and this one is no different are the updated gas price listings. In these pinch the pennies times, I love discovering new places to get cheap gas. The connected capabilities of the CNV-10 allow you to get pretty recent gas price updates. Mind you they aren't in real time :-)
Ok the final and most important part, does it get you where you wanted to go. Yes it does. With some choppy sound and that ugly interface that I talked about before, but it gets you there :-)
