Insomnia treatment is something that the doctors have to deal with more frequently in this worrying time of ours.  Some forms of insomnia are much easier to treat than others. If you are having problems with sleeping and you think that you might be an insomniac then you should visit your local doctor.  There are a few different types of sleep disorders that you can get insomnia treatments for. There is a chronic insomniac, the intermittent or intermediate insomniac, and there is the transient insomniac. The latter two are often very easy to prescribe insomnia treatments for. Sometimes with the use of mild sedatives or, and more preferably, using relaxation techniques before bedtime.

All of us have problems sleeping at some stage in our lives. Today's economic climate is a worrying time and I'm sure there are plenty of people who have problems drifting off into sleep, but imagine this going on every single night.

Chronic insomnia

Chronic insomnia is where you have either difficulty going to sleep, or you have difficulty maintaining sleep for any length of time. In the chronic insomniac this could go on for months or even years. They are the ones that really need treatments for insomnia.

Causes of chronic insomnia

Chronic insomnia is different from a normal restless night in that there is generally underlying psychological or physical problems that are causing sleeplessness. These underlying problems have to be dealt with before normal sleeping patterns can be achieved, even with the use of drugs.

Relaxation therapy

Treatment of insomnia can come in many forms and there are therapies available that do not involve taking drugs. One of these is relaxation therapy. Different relaxation methods are used such as yoga or meditation. In fact anything that helps the body or mind to relax including music and aromatherapy can be used. The idea is to calm the mind and relax the body.

Recondition therapy

Another treatment for insomnia therapy is recondition therapy which is where the patient only goes to bed when they feel sleepy. The patient is not allowed to watch TV, read books, or use the telephone while in their bed. With this type of therapy the patient is conditioned to regard the bed only as a place for sleep.

Sleep restriction therapy

This type of insomnia treatment involves the use of sleep restriction. The patient is only allowed to stay in bed for small periods of time. If the insomniac can fall asleep during these short periods, the periods are increased until the patient can sleep for a full night.

Food and insomnia treatment

There are certain foods that promote sleep because they contain a protein called tryptophan. These foods include bananas, figs, dates, tuna, and milk. You should avoid all stimulants before going to bed including alcohol and caffeine. Although alcohol can sometimes make you fall asleep you are not getting the rest that you need because of the stimulating nature of alcohol.

I actually have the opposite problem, I can't get up in the morning. That said, this is some great info, will you be adding any new insomnia treatment that may crop up to this list?
