Medical conditions that can cause insomnia:

  • Pain syndromes

It is estimated that 30 to 50% of the general population has insomnia (10% have cronic insomnia)

Insomnia affects all age groups but does affect women more than men.

Why do some people have insomnia?

  • Stress is the biggest factor
  • Your mind is too busy before you go to bed (You watch television or study before bedtime) Your mind will be too busy to shut down.

Other specific causes of insomnia could be:

  • Changes in shift work
  • Excessive noise
  • Uncomfortable temperature
  • Stress (loss of a loved one, divorce, unemployment etc.)
  • Insomnia can also be caused by high altitude areas
  • Illness
  • Caffeine (coffee)
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Smoking (nicotine)
  • A partner that snores or moves around allot in bed


People that are at a higher risk for insomnia:

  • Shift workers

  • Students

  • Pregnant ladies

  • Menopausal women


Tips on how to relieve insomnia:

  • Keep your bedroom a place where you sleep not work
  • Do not oversleep
  • Exercise regularly
  • Avoid trying to force yourself to sleep
  • Don’t drink coffee before you sleep or nay other drink with caffeine in it.
  • Avoid smoking in the evenings if you cannot quit entirely
  • Don’t go to bed hungry
  • Don’t eat or drink too much before bed time
  • White noise can also help

How do you know if you have insomnia?

If you do any of the following on a regular basis:

  • You lie in bed for longer than an hour every night trying to fall asleep
  • You wake up in the middle of the night and struggle to fall asleep again
  • You toss and turn allot at night
  • You wake up too early in the morning
  • You feel tired when you wake up in the morning


Foods that can help you sleep at night:

· Cottage cheese, cheese, milk

· Soy products: soy milk, tofu, soybean nuts

· Lentils

· Hazelnuts, Peanuts

· Eggs

· Sesame seeds, sunflower seeds

· Meats, seafood, Poultry

· Whole grains, Beans, Rice

· Hummus
