Insomnia Causes and Treatments

Insomnia is a prolonged sleeplessness or the inability to obtain enough sleep. Older people sometimes complain of not being able to sleep well at night, but this is often because they are not active and they usually sleep during the day.



Insomnia in some cases causes an emotional disorder, irritability and difficulty in concentrating. As a effect, this brings a loss of energy, fatigue during the day. At the same time, it hinders the person from relaxing enough to be able to sleep at night.

Insomnia is not a disease itself but it can be a symptoms of an underlying disorder.

Types of Insomnia :

a. Predormitional Insomnia - a case in which the person has difficulty falling asleep.

Causes : Vigorous mental activity and Excitement

b. Postdormitional Insomnia - a case in which a person awakes very in the middle of the sleep and cannot get back to sleep.

Causes : Achy legs, Shortness of breath, Fever, Skin Irritation

Other Causes of Insomnia : Stress, Depression, Worries, Drinking coffee cola beverages, tea ,chocolate in excess, Drugs, Drinking alcohol before going to sleep, Indigestion - because of too much eating and Physical discomfort

Recommended Treatments :

  1. Don't think about not being able to fall asleep this will only intensifies insomnia.
  2. Think that you a in a nice and calm place like the beach.
  3. Write down on a sheet of paper what is worrying you before going to sleep so that you can have everything organized for the next day.
  4. Try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day.
  5. Breathe deeply several times before going to bed and if possible.
  6. Have someone give you a massage.
  7. Drink half a glass of milk or yogurt.
  8. Turn your alarm clock away from you.
  9. Exercise regularly, but never before going to sleep.

Thanks a lot for this. I'm especially glad to see that you stress all natural aids, rather than medications, as a cure for insomnia - or at least as a way to find relief.

Good advice. Not thinking about not being able to fall asleep can be really difficult. Try progressive relaxation, deep breathing coupled with positive afirmations. Focus on relaxing the body from head to toe and breathing in and out slowly.

Also try focusing on the relaxation point between the eyes.
