The name "Gandhi" is synonymous with peace and non-violence. His epic struggle to bring together the people of India in their search for sovereignty is unparalleled. This great man's wisdom and foresight are compelling. On this page, you will find some of the most powerful Gandhi quotes.

1.The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.

2. What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty and democracy?

3. The only tyrant I accept in this world is the still voice within.

4. It may be long before the law of love will be recognised in international affairs. The machineries of government stand between and hide the hearts of one people from those of another.

5. As soon as we lose the moral basis, we cease to be religious. There is no such thing as religion over-riding morality. Man, for instance, cannot be untruthful, cruel or incontinent and claim to have God on his side.

6. There is more to life than simply increasing its speed.

7. We must be the change we wish to see.

8. The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.

9. The moment there is suspicion about a person's motives, everything he does becomes tainted.

10. Suffering cheerfully endured, ceases to be suffering and is transmuted into an ineffable joy.

11. It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence.

12. Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.

13. I love your Christ. I don't like your Christians, because they're not like Christ.

14. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

15. Hate the sin, love the sinner.

16. I want freedom for the full expression of my personality.

17. Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary.

18. Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

19. Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.

20. Permanent good can never be the outcome of untruth and violence.

21. A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.

Thanks for appreciating my effort of compiling these quotes. I love reading biographies of great people who have achieved and changed the world for better (Hence people like Hitler, Stalin... aren't favorites in my list)

Btw is there a Tintin museum in Belgium ?(Herge was my childhood favorite comics writer)

I love the wisdom, and love of Mahatma Gandhi. I have so many favorites.

Here is one of all time favorite quotes from Gandhi, "I love your Christ. I don't like your Chritians, because they're not like Christ."

All the Best to you,

Glad to meet another Gandhi Fan. I once was so idealistic to follow his quote literally "Simple living high thinking". Now my lifestyle is anything but simple....hehe

Thanks for stopping and commenting.

Number fifteen is a tall order, impossible to execute. Extremely sorry about that, but how can a mere mortal love the sinner?

The one about CHRIST and christians mentioned by St James is brilliant! :)

Anyways, "JAI HIND!" I do not know what that means, but I am certain that it is complementary. :)

I agree it's tough but that is one of the principles of reformation (followed by some in Jails by imparting meditation/yoga techniques to inmates). Jai Hindi to you too.

Hi, CW- Thought I'd stop by for a quick look before I went to bed, :). Good quotes!I actually wrote some lesson plans for a company in Seatte on Ghandi--freelance work.... I'd say you got a fair response, yes? I'm not too worried about mine.

Lita- Thanks for stopping by 4/5 the rest are my responses..hehe.

Probably you can have a hub about that free lance work you did. I am always interested in reading about Gandhi.

Well I meant not in terms of traffic but in terms of general interest that a hub generates. This hub took me more time to compile/write compared to the other hub "It's Ok not to be a christian" but that one got me way more than the response I expected (some unflattering emails too)...LOL

Just found this great hub tonight. I love Ghandi and often quote him. I would love to add this hub to my latest one about peace, if its okay with you. Would blend in beautifully.

My favorite quote is: . "We must be the change we wish to see". Words of true wisdom.

Off to sleep. Would be cool if I dreamt with of talking to Socrates or a Ghandi. :)

Cris- Thanks for pointing that out. I have included this one of yours too. Thanks for visiting this hub. I am glad that you think that way about this great Indian Personality called Gandhi.

Violet- Sure go ahead. It will be a honor if more people can hear and practice the wisdom that this great man had to share. Yes that is one of my favorites too. Every time I tend to complain about something I ask myself that question. I hope you did have a good dream and will come back to tell us what it was...hehe

Hellow C.W.

Gandhi is a legend he showed many things in his life for the rest to follow , for a peaceful and violence free world.  Everyone must read his autobiography which is very much available in all leading books stores all over the world. During 1930's in a meeting at Madurai in south India he was shocked to see many people were without shirts as they are all poor who could not afford to buy, he immediatly quit wearing shirts such a great heart he was. thankyou for this hub it really makes india proud.

Violet- Thanks for starting the new year with a wish to see the world peaceful and happy. It has been my pleasure to meet such a kind and caring soul here.

Hari- Their is another story where a mother asks Gandhi to talk to her son to quit sweets and he asked her to come back in two weeks with her son. Then she asks him why you asked for two weeks time and he says it took him two weeks to quit sweets himself. He was surely a great man for he practised what he preached. Thanks for stopping by.

Actually he was one of my favorite prophets. Imagine stopping war through none-resistance? That's a feat "not" to be undermined!

WriterRider- Oops I missed this comment. I go so much to other hubs that I forget to check whether I received any comment. Yes that is pretty unique resistance and that too inspiring a country of the size of Undivided India. Another person I really admire is Mother Teresa. We need such people in the world to inspire us and show that it is possible to be good&successful instead of some present day "role models" who feel the ends justify the means. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I see you are still getting comments with this hub-that's a good sign, methinks. Folks interested in peace. By the way, I found a new hubber who wrote an interesting, positive hub with a fable that I liked! Thought I would share here; guess I am being promotional. hehe.  Do you notice we both have the same cyber laugh? LOL!

These quotes are so appropriate for our current social climate. We all need to work together and maintain hope. There is a silver lining to every situation.

If more people could only learn to forgive & live without judgement or expectation..."The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong."

Love it. Thank you for sharing!

"Permanent good can never be the outcome of untruth and violence," is my favorite Gandhi quote. I've admired him for many years, and enjoyed the movie "Gandhi" and also "Nine Hours to Rama," an excellent movie about his assassination. Martin Luther King made use of his tactics, I think, in seeking justice here in America.
