Integrating General Pedagogical Strategies with Innovations in Elearning Solutions
56Education remains one of the pillars of modern society and civilization, allowing man to evolve, think with clarity and purpose, and live appropriately as dictated by individual cultures and orientations. Regardless of the culture, however, there are general practices in education that are mainly held as acceptable and practiced as standard procedure to be used in learning situations. These general practices have become the guidelines and most widely accepted strategies in classroom applications, and are known as the General Pedagogical strategies. These strategies include:
• Stating the day's objectives at the beginning of the class
• Paraphrasing key points from the reading and lectures
• Providing examples (and identify things that are not examples)
• Providing written directions
• Varying the teaching methods (lecture, discussion, small groups).
• For large projects, providing step-by-step directions, bullet those directions, & give advanced notice of due dates (at least 2 weeks)
• Selecting well organized textbooks with subheadings, clear explanations and instructions, and appropriate examples
• Printing out of copies of overheads and make them available to students.
• Reviewing all materials
• Encouraging the formation of study groups
• Providing pre-reading questions for each reading assignment or group of related assignments
• Identifying key points in the readings and lectures
• Not penalizing students/learners for spelling, organizational, or hand writing errors on timed examinations
• Allowing students/learner to use lap top computers for examinations
• Going over all instructions in class and provide a written version--but don't provide overwhelming amounts of instruction
These practices allow the entire educational procedure to be smooth and organized, providing a maximum of learning with a minimum of chance of an unorganized session, to ensure that the ultimate goal of the entire process is achieved, that of learning the most possible. These pedagogical strategies are so effective that it has also been employed even in instructional situations that are not confined to the traditional classroom setting, such as that of e-leaning solutions, now a widely accepted educational means.
Learning management systems such as elearning solutions have largely been accepted as a favorable means of non-traditional learning because of the ultimate convenience afforded by being web-based: it can practically be taken virtually anywhere the learner may be, provided that there is a viable internet connection. This convenience, as a consequence, also extends to the time factor. e-Learning development tools can be accessed at practically any time the learner would want, be it day or night, thus precluding having to sacrifice a significant amount of time in learning whatever it is that needs learning.
Another favorable factor of elearning solutions is the fact that because it is done over the internet, it is inextricably linked with innovations in technology, thus completely integrating modern breakthroughs in every lesson learned. Their very nature allow the learner to not only learn about technology in theory, but also in practical application, since pieces of cutting edge technology, such as personal computers, are intrinsic parts of the learning process.
