I highly recommend you to use JCE for editing purpose. It gives you the power to create the kind of content you want, without limitations, and without needing to know or learn HTML, XHTML, CSS.

For your website Gallery, the best Plugin is PhocaGallery. http://www.phoca.cz/phocagallery.
Download the relevant component and modules from the website http://www.phoca.cz/download.
If you have any problem to install the plugin, then just post your question to the support forum.
Joomla Calender and Events
To manage your events and have a calendar at your website, then I will vote for JEvent. http://www.jevents.net/.
I have never came across any installation problem.
Joomla Contact Form
Use QContacts to have more subject fields and you could add in an anti-spam verification image (captcha) to the contact form to prevent spamming by autobots.
