It's Still Here

Some think that the two-dollar bill is out of circulation;that is not true.Fact is:our mint would probably print more of them,if we would use them.

For the collector, they can be the ultimate.I would probably give my wife for one of the early ones;"just joking honey."

Here is a list of some of our two dollar bills, who was on them, and other interesting info on them.

The First $2 bill

In 1862 the first two dollar bill was printed. It had a portrait of Alexander Hamilton on it.in 1869 it was redesigned with Thomas Jefferson on it.It also said Treasury note on it instead of United States note.In 1874 that was changed and some other minor changes.{removed some of the green tint}.

In 1886 they were issued with a portrait of civil war general Winfield Scott Hancock. These were also silver certificates and could be redeemed for silver worth two dollars.

In 1891 a new silver certificate came to be with treasury secretary William Windom on it.

Educational Series

1896 ushered in the "educational series" two dollar bills.

The front depicts science offering steam to manufacturing and commerce. The backs had portraits of Robert Fulton and Samuel Morse.

In 1899 the silver certificate had a portrait of George Washington in the midst of agriculture and mechanics.

Every note up until this point was a somewhat large note. You would have had to fold it to put it in todays wallets.

Small Notes

In 1929 the design was changed much like the one we have today. It could now fit in our billfolds.

In 1963 In God We Trust was added and they could no longer pay out in silver. In 1966 two dollar bills were discontinued.

Bicentennial

In 1976,our bicentennial year, they were reintroduced. The one pictured was a first day issue;if you had one you could go to the post office and get it stamped.Quite the collectable!!!

Will They Stay

The last printing of two-dollar bills was in 2003.As I said befor, the treasury says there are many out there in circulation. How many are really in people's collections? Will we print more??

I guess we wait and see.

I have two 2 dollar bills which have the green circular logo and many people keep telling me they are not real but they are!.

in the picture above it has a 3 on each corner, well, mine has 11 on one note and 12 on the other!! don't know how significant this is..

I love the portrait on the back which has about 50 people in it! but i have no idea what it symbolises..!

Thanks Froggy Great Hub..

nope, not rich compu, but they are worth more than 2$ apiece.Take a look at the ebay auctions up there--It will give you a good idea on value.

I once about 4 years ago bought an educational series 2$ bill at auction, they thought it was foreign money.I paid $5 for it;sold it couple years back for 900$.That was a real good investment!!You have to be careful though, there are counterfeiters out there.

I thought not!!

Thats a nice markup! good going;) I will check out Ebay just for curious reasons, . i won't sell them as they make fine art on the wall and with regards to forgery problems i could always double check at a bank, but i doubt ill ever bother!

If your doing more of these hubs, stuff about a million dollar hub would be good!?

Just a thought;)

I read in Utne magazine that strip bars give $2 bills as change. Basically, and all the details can be found at the link below, since $2 bills are a bit rare and having a lot of them could cause family and friends to ask questions, most strip club patrons use them as tips. The club and the strippers make more money. Ingenuous really. In Canada the smallest bill is a $5....

The story can be found at: http://www.utne.com/2007-09-01/Politics/The-Two-Do

Nice hub, Froggy213. I have three or four $2 bills in my little collection. I think one is the 1963 series and the others are the 1976 variety. As far as I know, they didn't come from strip shows.

I have a Canadian two dollar bill and a Canadian five dollar bill, both from 1954. Any idea if they are valuable... other than the $7 it adds up to?

I keep every $2 bill I get. My daughter was given five of them in change just this week. They're mine now! Three of them were the 1976 variety with the 11's and 12's like mentioned above. Two of them were from 1995 and have 6's on them. But, I have lots of them put away that I got 18 years ago at a baby shower for my first child.

Our college bookstore usd to give thim in change for purchases when possible-- not sure why. They should re issue them with state cmmeroative designs on the back-- like they did for quarters, then people would collect them again.
