How Much Paint Will You Need?

So, how much interior house paint will you need? To find out, the area to be painted must be measured.

Multiply the sum of the width of each wall by the height of your walls.

The areas covered by fireplaces, windows, trim, wallpaper, etc are the next to be measured.

Subtract these areas' total square footage if they end up being greater than 10 percent of the area you are painting.

Divide your square footage by the paint's spread rate. Listed on the can will be the spread rate of your paint.

Safety Tips For Painting Your House

Interior house paint can be safe, as long as you pay attention to the safety instructions on the paint cans and solvent containers.

Keep your pets out of all the rooms you're painting.

Open your windows and doors and use a fan. Paint in a well-ventilated area.

However, wear a respirator mask if you can't paint in a well-ventilated area .

Wear your gloves, respirator, and goggles when using solvents, strippers and cleaning solutions. Always remember to wear good safety goggles and a dust mask when you're sanding.

Use canvas drop cloths. They do a better job staying in place than plastic sheets, which tend to slide around.

But please note! This list is NOT complete!

Read the safety labels on your thinner and paint cans....

Don't smoke around paint cans or solvents. Keep all paints and solvents away from pets and children. Avoid open flames.
