International conference on war criminals
An international conference, to looking for the process of identifies the war criminals of the Liberation War in 1971, has organized at CIRDAP auditorium, Dhaka on July 30-31. The LiberationWarMuseum organized the conference to develop a broad network to ensure justice to those responsible for crimes against humanity.
The conference called for a campaign for United Nations' recognition of the mass killings during the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh as genocide. The conference also called to start the trial process of war criminal of Bangladesh.
Experts on trail of war criminals from Hong Kong, Korea, Germany, Japan, Pakistan, Canada, Cambodia, UK and Bangladesh attended in the event named ‘the Second International Conference on Genocide’. Representative from the International Criminal Court, international legal prosecutors involved in war crimes tribunals, International Council of Jurists, and academics also kept their views about the process of trail of the propagators and collaborators of genocides during the independent war of 1971. Bangladesh can learn from the experiences of those who were involved in trying war criminals in different countries.
Non-resident Bangladeshis participated and provided their opinion via online video conference. A special session also arranged with involving witnesses, victims of genocide and members of young generation.
The conference was a historic event for the nation. It will help government’s move to try the war criminals. The conference will also assist in remind the Bangladesh genocide back onto global agenda. It will also helpful to raise awareness amongst Bangladeshis at home and across the world to strengthen the initiative to bring the war criminals of 1971 to justice.
The issue of the conference is not important only for Bangladesh but also other victim countries. Experts addressed how societies victimized by genocide and mass atrocities can move forward and how world community can prevent such brutality from recurring in future.
The LiberationWarMuseum held the first such conference in March, 2008 to create consensus at home and abroad about the demand of trial of the war criminals. After that the position of the nation has already cleared on the issue of war criminals trail through the national election 2008. Government has also decided to try the war criminals and made necessary amendments to the International Crimes (Tribunal) Act, 1973.
