Five Lessons to Shorten Your Internet Marketing Journey
62Shorten Your Learning Curve
I've been involved in internet marketing for the past six months and I'm amazed at what I've learned. In that short time, I've learned enough to add real value for people and be able to confidently coach and guide them. In this hub, I'm going to share my key learnings with you so that you can accelerate your own learning curve.
Some quick background. I got started in network marketing
over 5 years ago and I honestly thought that sharing my business
(the best thing since sliced bread, right?) was going to help people.
Now I did pretty well, with around 200 people on my team.
But something never felt right. I was passionate about the company and the
products but not about the business. What I didn’t understand at the time, was
that it wasn’t the network marketing industry I had a problem with, it was the
way the industry conducts itself.
I knew that calling cold leads was not a targeted marketing
strategy. And I absolutely hated approaching family and friends. And there was
no way I was going to approach people in the grocery store or at the gas
station.
So in the summer of 2008, I took to the computer to do some
research. I wanted to see if there was a smarter way to do this business. I
spent months searching around, and had all kinds of people pitch me, court me
and spam me.
I finally came across Ann Sieg’s 7 Great Lies of Network
Marketing. You might have heard of it. You might have even read it. The first
time I read it, I was turned off. I thought it was some kind of scam to get me
to sell something. Then I read it a second time and I decided to take a
different perspective. There was so much valuable information in it, that I
chose to take it at face value and open my mind to learning from it.
I can’t tell you how grateful I am that I made that decision.Ann Sieg opened up the door for me, and thousands of other network marketers and entrepreneurs, to stop chasing after people, but rather use the Internet to attract qualified people. It is called attraction marketing, and it involves providing valuable information and resources that help your target market solve their needs.
For internet network marketing success, your role is to become a solutions provider and attract people to you by providing value. You can then develop business relationships with the people you attract, and as we all know, relationships are an essential part of the marketing process. Another thing that got me excited was that I found there were many opportunities to monetize throughout this process so that you can fund your business growth. You do this through affiliate marketing, providing people with business tools they need to build their own business, rather than trying to pitch them on buying into your business.
Attraction marketing made a lot of sense to me, but I knew I couldn't figure it all out alone. I invested in some excellent internet marketing training programs that really accelerated my progress. Again I did my research to make sure I was finding programs that were truly beneficial and good value.
Internet Network Marketing Lessons
Here are five key things I’ve learned in the past few months:
- Attraction marketing is a legitimate way to build a business online. The key to attraction marketing success is to come from an honest place of wanting to help people by offering valuable information and support. No hidden agendas. Just open yourself up to meeting people, sharing what you can, and offering genuine support. The rest will come.
- Affiliate marketing is a great way to monetize. The people you will meet online are trying to build a successful business, and to do that, they need certain business tools. If you can genuinely refer them to programs, products and services that offer good value, then it is a win-win.
- Education is key to success. People are going to be attracted to you because they see you as someone who can help them achieve their goals. You don't have to have all the answers, but if you try to fake it 'till you make it, it will show. Invest the time to educate yourself and get some internet marketing training (and to learn how to further shorten your learning curve, see below).
- Although it seems like there are a ton of people doing business online, you can distinguish yourself. There are many ways to do this, but the bottom line is that there is only one you. Share your perspective on things, use your unique talents, be true to who you are. Your integrity and credibility will shine through.
- You don’t have to do this alone. You can create a community of support with people you meet online. Start by connecting with someone you meet online and have a conversation. You can exchange emails or DMs, but at some point, take it to the phone. There is something about hearing a person’s voice that makes the relationship more tangible.
I’ve made some good money in the past few months, but more importantly I’ve made some great connections, met some amazing people, learned a tremendous amount and am having a lot of fun.

Thank you Eric for your support and kind words. You raise a great point. If you rush into things and just try to generate leads without knowing what you're doing, then I don't think you'll have as good results as if you embrace the learning process and find your own groove. We all have different skills and it's a matter of finding a place to start that fits you uniquely.
A good first step, Cindy, for anyone who sees network marketing as a viable business method but who is aware that it is very poorly presented. Your hub will point them in the right direction.
I didn't want to read the 7 Great Lies either. I'm sure glad I did; my business has done a 180 degree turn.
You offer excellent value here Cindy. Affiliate marketing makes it possible to get immediate cash to fund your business. Flying solo is so much more difficult; when you are part of a team you don't need to be the expert. You simply need to know where to guide people.
You will definitely be able to shorten people's learning curve!
Thanks Frederick and Irene. After I wrote this I was thinking about all kinds of other lessons learned in the past few months, but I wanted to lay a basic foundation. To be continued....
Nice job Cindy! I am gobbling up all the new lessons and learning I can get.
Thanks Aviva - there will be lots of gobbling going on come February 26 when Attraction Marketer's Manifesto is scheduled to be released. All the best!
Cindy,
Great job. I loved the way you broke it down into elements of what YOU learned from attraction marketing. Everyone takes a little bit from this incredible way of marketing.
That's so true Anita - and that's what makes everybody have the potential to be successful with attraction marketing. It's all about branding yourself and sharing your perspective and unique value. thanks!
Hi Cindy,
You have posted some great articles on attractin marketing. I was in an insurance agency business for about 40 years and you know brick and mortar business marketing and sales was an entirely different thing than what is going on with the internet. I dealt with a very necessary product with good high quality companies with good products and high quality service. It was easier I think to advertise and deliver in that type of business. It is a very difficult learning curve in internet marketing And there is a lot of distruct of what marketers are doing on the internet.
It is very hard to buildi relationships in a community with millions of peple (the internet commnuity). I have been in a total new learning curve this past year and still going. I think you need to have 4 years of study in this internet marketing business (like going to college and getting a degree) and then maybe you are ready to get started. Perhaps then you spend another 4 years to establish yourself. A serious question, what was it like the first year? Did it seem like a very daunting task?
Regards,
Paul Gardner
Hi Paul,
I really appreciate your question. You are right. There is a big learning curve and it does take time before you can start seeing results. The good news is that 1) there are some great training resources available to help you; 2) there are some great people to help you; and 3) you don't have to learn everything at once.
I only started actively working in internet marketing in September 2008. I started generating income the very next month. Nothing to get too excited, a few hundred dollars, but enough to show me that this really does work.
Over the past few months, I've had a steady stream of people join my list. And that is really what your goal is with attraction marketing. You want people to request more information from you so you can build a relationship with them and earn their trust.
Can you do this faster than I did? Absolutely. I'm a mom of two little boys so life is busy. But if you put in a concerted effort in the beginning, then you will find that you gain momentum and things will start happening.
Now that being said, you want to put your efforts in the right places. Before I did anything, I did some serious research to decide which training programs to join and who to work with. I'm very happy with the choices I have made.
If you would like to have a personal conversation I would be happy to share more. Just send me an email at cindy@homebusinesswins.com or call me at 619 318 8688.
Many thanks Paul. I wish you all the best and look forward to connecting with you soon!
Cindy
Thank you cindy, what you said makes snes to me, and I am intuitively building in that direction I think as well. If it is ok with you I will refer to your writing more in the future, I am trying to help myself but also some dear friends who are having a tough time surviving despite their professional merits. Success to you and all you touch. *hugs*

It's such a huge learning curve at the beginning. Learning to effectively market on the web is a learned skill, for sure. And it's amazing what can happen with focus and a rock steady patience over the course of 3,6.9 months, even a year. The one thing we should all understand is that at first, it's not really about generating leads, it's about learning enough about yourself so you understand what value you have to offer. That and a persistent indulgence in education.
I think anyone would greatly benefit from what you have offer Cindy. Nice job with this hub.
