What's wrong with Interracial Marriages?

Seal and Heidi Klum

When people fall in love, they love their other half as a person and as it so happens in life, we can't help who we fall in love with. No matter the race - the fact is, two people have fallen in love and want to share their lives together.

I read an article in the news this week about Keith Bardwel, A Justice in America, refusing to marry an interracial couple. Full Story.

It’s a pity to know that there are still people out there who think less of people of other races. This issue is still happening in some continents, racism against Asians, against Caucasians and also amongst African/Americans - who get it the most. I wonder what goes through people’s minds. All human beings were born of a woman, deserve to be respected and treated equally. Yet, I still hear stories of:

  • Parents disowning their children because they married someone of another race.

  • Footballers in Europe being subject to racist tauntings.

  • Innocent people being attacked and sometimes killed because of their race. Some Asians even have “honour killings” because they don’t like their families marrying outside their race.

  • And then there are websites such as whiterevolution.com who want to keep America white?!!

David Bowie and Iman

As at now, 2009 the issues above are still happening and those are just some issues. Have we forgotten that we should be our brother’s keeper no matter what race or religion we belong to. We are not better than our neighbours vice versa. Every human is equal. God made us all and we should live together amicably and peacefully. Supporting and inspiring one another. Also, to fellow Africans and other people – I know a lot of you have been hurt due to this issue, but please release the bitterness from your system and move on or else it will eat away at your heart forever.

The two main points I want to raise in this article are that:

1) Interracial marriages are now on the increase, a lot of them are strong and are very happy families. So, lets just move on or does Michael Jackson have to come back to sing “It doesn't matter if we're Black or white” Pt Two.………? I didn’t think so, either. I live in London and can see these marriages growing in number.

Interracial Marriages Flourishing

2) Lets stop seeing each other as a colour. Every one has red blood flowing through their veins.

Food for thought - people of all races donate blood. I am yet to see a hospital that has blood for the Asians, blood for the African/Americans and blood for the Caucasians. So, for those of you who have had blood transfusions or might have one in future, the blood could be that of a different race. My point - we are all human.

In summary, I’ll leave you with a short poem I wrote, while reflecting on this article.

.

How would you feel if your children were hated

Due to racial tension they never created?

.

You work so hard to be a success

But cos of your colour, they block your progress

.

How would you feel if people attacked you for no reason

Hands clean and innocent, yet your still thrown in prison?

.

What will it take for you to love your neighbour

Till a loved one gets killed or till your nearly 6 foot under?

.

Lets live together in harmony, irrespective of colour

Even God said, "prefer one another in honour". Rom 12:10

.

Thanks to AEvans for posting the article in Forums.

Your thoughts please...

Do you think the issue of racism will ever go away?

  • Yes
  • No
  • It won't go away but it will definitely decline
  • It will get worse

It is too bad that there are still places where such backward thinking still holds. I had hoped we were getting out of it. My daughter-in-law is African/American and I couldn't have asked for a better lady to join our family. How dumb can an American be to have a problem with this when the leader of his country is bi-racial.

When I read the heading of this hub, I was touched and quickly answered that there is nothing wrong with interracial mattiage. I believe with time, things will sort itself out. People naturally fall in love and there is hardly anything anyone can do about it. In most cases however, the issue is not with the couple but with the extended families. The point remains that we are all humans irrespective of colour of continent. Lets love one another. Nice hub and congrats on the follow-up poem.

Racism is just straight ignorant. Interracial marriages are just fine. I do not believe racism will ever go away... In the Bible Jews didn't associate with Samaritans meaning there was racism even back then, so I don't think it will ever go away. I believe you just have to be above the ignorance.

Lady E,

Well written! Wonderful hub! Excellent "Food For Thought" point in regards to blood. I always say we all "bleed red!"

Personally it does not matter to me what color you are. It is important to be mindful that there are additional stereotypes to keep in mind because of this.

There are some very successful interracial marriages!

What is most important is that you Love, Value and Share the same principles of life, family and living!

Thank you for sharing.

Blessings!

Lady _E: What a wonderful hub I to agree love does not have any color and I too am in an interracial relationship where love only sees a color as clear. I would not trade my husband for the world and I feel blessed each day we are together. I certainly hope that many of us are around to see change but I don't know if it will happen in this lifetime. It doesn't matter to me who you are Love is what makes the world go round. :)

Thanks again everyone for your comments. I'm trying to refrain myself from commenting on this Hub because I don't trust myself to write a few sentences. I'll write non ending paragraphs. Lol.

AEvans and Osho, that's so sweet. I wish you continued happiness in your marriages and hope it will testify to people who are against it. Thanks for your comments. :)

Catherine - I hope we can move on too. Lovely to hear from you. :)

Hi James - I agree with your comments. Much respect and regards. :)

I've had this argument with people more times than I choose to remember. Still, as is the same with the question of gay marriage...I just want to know (without using religion as the excuse) WHY one person feels the need to have opinion on the life of another person when it comes to whom they love and choose to live their life with.

It's tough enough to navigate this life and if one person finds another, regardless of race or sexuality, who loves them, respects them and makes them feel secure and safe...why should anyone else have a problem with it? With all the horrific things going on on this planet, it boggles my mind that time is wasted on a debate on whether or not a couple is mixed or if they're gay.

great hub; inspiring poem. I do not think that racism will ever go away, because there will always be those that are insecure with themselves who have to find someone that they think that they are better than. Racism is but one form of Hate. Self hate projected outwards. I think.

Something I heard a long time ago, a source I can't identify,: eventually all of the races and colors of Humanity will blend into one, to join with that truth beneath the skin of us all. Wonderful Hub. Thank you.

* Nice of you to stop by Jerami, I also think it won't go away but hope it decreases significantly.

* Hi Denno, it would be nice if we could all blend into one. Thanks for stopping.

Racism, will never go away, but it has gotten better over the years. I am a product of mixed race, and as a young teenager, in high school, felt it very keenly. I am 59 years old now, and it isn't as traumatic as it once was. I see all human beings as creatures of God, and when I see others, I see no color but the person. Thank you for allowing me to share.

wodderful hub. I don't understand people who can look at someone and dislike them just because of their nationality. Living in America I have seen this time and time again and am apalled at it, such a loss for the feebleminded. Also, the thing that really bothers me about all this is that if these two people who love each other have a child, the child has to suffer, get called names, and be hated. It's not fair. I did not answer the poll becuase I did not see an option I would choose, I would choose, I hope to GOD it does.

Lady_E,

It is truly unfortunate that people are so blind to what they see so clearly.

I am a caucasian woman married to a Latin American man. We have been together, in love, accepted, for the past 26 years, married for 23 of those years. We have three well-adjusted children from our union and their lives are as blessed as they can be.

Your article is well written and expresses the very truth of the matter. We can look beyond the color of the skin or we can choose to impose our archaic views on others. The judge in Louisiana has been requested to step down. I do not know if he has or not. I live in neighboring Texas.

Your poem is lovely, your pictures show acceptance, but until the older, set in their ways members of the past stop teaching their youngers we will continue to have this unfortunate and unacceptable behavior from people.

We can only hope that it reduces to the point where it is merely an annoyance and no longer an issue.

Great HUB. Thanks so much.

Kate

Very well-written and full of truth that we all need to take to heart and put into practice. Skin shade has nothing to do with the character and integrity of a person. It's a persons heart that should be taken into consideration, not their skin color. We are all made of flesh and blood and have the breath of God that keeps us alive, so we should look at each other as human beings and not try dissect and separate one another by the tint of our flesh. No shade of color is superior or better than another.

Truthful comments. Thanks Angelaca - love the way you put it. Wish I could copy those comments and paste it into the Hub itself. From your first sentence, sometimes I believe society plays a part. E.g The news - An African maybe was attacked. The person reading the news says "A black man was attacked". Now, if it was an English guy, we wouldn't here "a white man was attacked". So, these comments don't help and kids watching will just see it as normal.

It should be "An African was attacked". Ah, well, don't mind me - I'm in a rambling mood today. Thanks for stopping. :)

This hub gets to the point, and I agree with you fully. Humanity (society) needs to find a way to get pass skin color. If only words could be used to set everyone straight, then the words in your hub would be what the world needs to read. Great hub!

Thank God it's not as bad as it used to be in the 50s, 60s - we just need to keep the progress going. Cheers.
