Hi I am Kaiba and I am a 2 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback. I became a member of the Polomka family in August 2005 and it was the best thing that ever happened to me. My kennel name is ‘Shakuru Only The Lonely' and the reason I got that name was because I was the only puppy in the litter.

My Dad is a champion Ridgeback but he is deceased and my Mum was artificially inseminated to conceive me (I think they were hoping for more puppies also). When I was born I wasn't breathing so my breeder gave me CPR for 45 minutes. I am glad she didn't give up because that was a long time to do CPR, but she saved my life and I started breathing. She couldn't breed or show me because my hips aren't quite wide enough so that was when I came to live with the Polomka and now I am part of their family.

I have three human brothers called Ben, Corey and Lachlan and they all love me. They let me put my head on their laps when I'm sleeping on the sofa next to them. In winter though I have to fight them to get the good spot in front of the heater. Sometimes if I'm cold at night I'll sneak into one of their beds when they are asleep.

I am obsessed with my Dad and can't wait for him to come home every day. When we were away on holidays I would get stressed if he was in the pool or doing something without me. If he went to the toilets I could not look away from that direction until he returned. My Mum is the one who protects me though and whenever I am scared (which is quite often because I'm a bit of a wuss) I hide behind Mum. I actually try to get under her legs but because I'm so big I just can't fit.

I am a really good dog though and when I'm out the front I won't leave our property. Even if I'm playing with the kids and chasing a ball, if the ball goes on the road I'll stop I wont go onto the road. Once I was chasing a cat and it was really hard to stop myself but I did, as soon as that cat went off our property I had to stop.

The other really good thing I do (it really impresses my Mum and Dad) is when they feed me I don't touch my food until they tell me I can. They say ‘good boy' and that's when I know I can eat. I even do it if the boys feed me and once Ben went inside and he forgot about me, and about 5 minutes later he looked out the window and remember that he hadn't said ‘good boy' to me. I was really good and I was still waiting, then he said it and I ate.

I like to spend most of the day sleeping on the sofa which I think is fairly common for my breed. I don't know why they think we're good for hunting lions because I'd much rather be sleeping all day. Anyway I really think I'd be scared of a lion.

If you don't know much about Ridgebacks then here is a little bit of information for you.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Breed Description

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a breed of dog from Southern Africa. Ridgebacks are loyal, intelligent, gentle, and very independent. They are, however, aloof to strangers. This breed requires training and dedication and is only for the experienced dog owner. They are strong-willed, exceptionally clever, and many seem to have a penchant for mischief. Although they can withstand wide temperature variations due to their African heritage, they are sensitive and prefer to be with their human families inside. They were traditionally hunters, guardians, and companions.

That is us basically, the hunting was hunting for lions. I think my ancestors use to bail lions up and keep them there until our owners came. The distinguishing feature of a Ridgeback is the ridge of hair running in the opposite direction down their back. Ridgebacks are either light wheaten or red wheaten in color. I am a red wheaten.

So that's all about me. I'm much more interesting than those mice and rats even if that Coco mouse did have babies.

Next time I might tell you a bit about our big holiday that we went on, it was pretty fun but it was a long way.

Bye

Kaiba
