Introducing Your Dog To An Electronic Collar
60
One of the most effective ways to train your dog is by using an electronic collar. An electronic collar will enable your dog to become a better hunting companion and pet much quicker than ordinary training methods. When combined with standard training and a little patience, you can have your dog trained with one of these devices in no time.
Different electronic collars deliver various levels of sensation to the dog. A larger dog will require stronger sensation to be delivered to him than a smaller dog. The type of electronic collar that you choose for your dog should be comparable to his breed.
Making Sure The Collar Fits
The collar should fit snugly around the dog's neck and not rub against his skin in an unpleasant way. An electronic collar is very similar to a regular dog collar so if your dog has been used to wearing a collar, there should be no problem putting this device on your dog. It is recommended that you wait until your dog is about 6 months old before introducing him to the electronic collar.
Make Sure The Receiver Is Under His Neck
You must then adjust the receiver in the electronic dog collar so that it fits under your dog's neck. The receiver will deliver a sensation to your dog when he fails to obey a command, but it is useless if it does not make skin contact with the animal. Make sure the receiver is in place and against the dog's skin before you begin training.
Use The Lowest Level Of Sensation
You do not want to throw a bunch of commands at your dog at one time. You will want to teach him to heel, to sit and to come when called. You will also want to teach him to stay. These are basic dog commands that all dogs, not just hunting dogs, should know and understand. When you first give your dog a "nick" which is a sensation from the training collar, you will want to use the lowest level available. Start training by teaching him one command, such as to "sit."
Use Traditional Methods, Too
Just because you have the training collar, do not think that it will automatically train your dog. And do not over use the sensations in place of traditional training. The purpose of the training collar is to allow the dog to associate an unpleasant sensation when he fails to heed a command. You will still want him to associate the command with the action. Thus, you should never transmit a sensation to the dog unless he fails to obey the command.
Just like anything else, training your dog in obedience takes patience, but the training collar does make it easier and quicker. This can be an invaluable tool for anyone who has a dog, especially if he expects the animal to be a good hunting companion. Once the dog understands the concept of the commands and that there are consequences for not obeying commands, you will need the collar less and less.
