Why follow these accounts?

There are several Iranian protest accounts on Twitter that help keep people informed on the situation in the country.  These accounts were established by both Iranian citizens and those abroad to keep the flow of information coming from a country where media is strictly regulated.  Many of these accounts use first person accounts and redirect information from sources within Iran.  Since these sources can be arrested, jailed and even killed for sharing this information with the world.  Thus, Twitter users have banned together to help share this information and protect those who would be punished for getting the word out there.

Can these accounts be trusted?

For the most part, these accounts can be trusted. However, in recent weeks, the Iranian Information Ministry has become involved in setting up fake Twitter accounts to help keep track and put out false information about protests. When this information is circulated, it can put users in Iran at risk if they show up at a protest site. The state can then arrest them and hold them accountable for being part of the election revolution going on within their country. Since the state wants to strictly control what is going on in Iran, it is very easy to false imprison Twitter users in Iran who are trying to fight for a fair election.

Which accounts should be followed?

The easiest way to determine what accounts should be followed is to check out @StopAhmadi and @ProtesterHelp. These are two of the most active and viable Iranian Twitter accounts. They help keep the flow of information out there, and they protect the identities of their sources. They also keep followers up to date on international news relating to Iran, protests within the country itself and any other information pertinent to those supporting Iranians trying to get their voices heard in a country that would rather keep them silent.
