Carbon trading what is it ?

Carbon trading has been in the news recently ...

Carbon trading has been in the news recently and is mentioned frequently when climate change is talked about.

I have always wondered how can you offset the 'carbon effect' of a business without actually reducing or altering the way it manufactures or runs its company. I have to admit that I thought I did not understand it because I was not clever enough or I did not know enough about it.

Recently however in news reports questions are being asked and I am beginning to suspect that this is going to be another way for the city to make money.

It is not my own research that is making me wonder about this . I am just a 'Mrs Ordinary' listening to the news and sometimes muttering about the state of the world to herself.

I just could never see the logic of it 'carbon trading' to me was a bit of a mystery. Reduce the idea down to my level and say : if I had a sister who never switched any of the lights off in her house and burned them for 24 hours a day would my never putting a light on in my house cancel that out ? Now you see my confusion, So here I will put links to educate myself a little bit about the subject and you can share reading them if you wish. I write this not because I want to be bombarded with information but because I am curious about the issue.

Here are links I have found...

(now all we have to do is read them carefully and try understandwhat it all  means).

Why do I care?

The truth is the more web pages I search through the more confusing it becomes...

I am not even asking the big question.. is climate change really taking place? The scientists can answer that one.

What I now want to know is... is someone going to get rich quick out of this (Carbon trading) without really caring about anything except their next bonus? And while they are doing so what should really be happening?

You wonder why I care ... because I am Mrs Ordinary... I am simple and complex... I like to visit places in Europe on short air journeys... but I try not to cause unnecessary waste .. I nurture and love the way the earth feeds us.. provides us with air to breath.. look at my photos ..of trees , gardens and plants.. I want this to exist for future generations.. our life is transient.. I believe that we should leave the world a better place.. not wrecked for the future and not exploited to the limit.

If the 'city' has led us to the brink with financial problems - made old peoples' enjoyment of retirement reduced, made it difficult for young people to buy homes; perhaps we should keep a watch on what they do with the environment.

No I have not answered the questions I have asked because I cannot find answers that I can easily understand.

If this sounds different to my usual writing style, it is.  The reason being that I consider myself a patient and reasonable person most of the time. However I find this and the way it is dealt with oddly perplexing at times.

2uesday-

To me carbon trading seems to be more like telling our fellow humans in the third world not to 'abuse ' the planet and spinning a web of lies to them-so that the greedy west can get fat on their share, and continue to pollute ad nauseum.

I don't trust them on this one-look what they did with people's money!!

hi itakins - sorry I missed reading your comment here. I am of an age when I worry about the future for future generations... so I just hope that what ever is done can be done soon enough and be effective enough to make the world a better place. The leaders of all countries -need to see themselves and us as the ones taking care of the planet for the future - and that means not exploiting it to the max. Hope you have a good Christmas itakins.
