How Does Walking Rate As A Fat Burning Exercise?

Enter any weight loss or diet forum and ask the question "how can I burn fat?" and more-then-likely someone will tell you to do some brisk walking for 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week.

I have nothing against brisk walking as it is something that I believe is good for the body and is some thing that I enjoy HOWEVER, brisk walking will not burn as much fat as you are lead to belive. Yes, it does raise the heart rate, yes you are using your larger muscles and yes, it does burn calories BUT it does rank low on the fat burning scale.

If you don't believe me, just look at those who are walking for fat burning. You will see the same people every day, yet they don't appear to be losing any good quantity of fat.

If you want to really blast fat you will need to add some weight training to your fitness routine. Lifting weights will not only burn more calories and fat but will add muscle which will help you burn more calories day in and day out. You can start with small 3 pound weights and build up as you get stronger. Ans women--don't worry you will not bulk up like a man--it's just not in our genes. Sure you will see professional female bodybuilders who are very muscular but they have worked very hard to achieve their goals. They weren't just looking to lose weight--they intentionally set out to build muscle.

For women a program such as The Firm's Transformation Total Body Workout (link) works well to firm and flatten using small hand weights.

For men a program such as Turbulence Training (link ) will help to build muscle while burning off the fat.

Do I suggest that you drop your walking program? Definitely not -walking is good for you but if you want to finally get rid of those pockets of fat your going to have to add in some weight training 3-4 days a week.

  • 3 Ways The South Beach Diet Can Work For You

3 Ways The South Beach Diet Can Work For You Some of you may have heard of the south beach diet, especially if you have been known to stay up to date on the health industry. For those of you who are a little less familiar with exactly how the diet has grown to be so successful, its actually a really easy concept. The diet mainly works by doing one simple thing. It slowly starts to reduce the amount of bad carbohydrates and fats that you are currently consuming and replaces them with good ones. Perhaps the fact that this concept is so basic and almost common sense, is the same reason that it getting so much attention lately. Due to the fact that it is a rather new trend in the health industry, there are not many great resources available for people that can afford professional help. Luckily, for this very reason we have put together the following guide to show you exactly how the south beach diet exercise can work for you. Tip#1: I know what your asking yourself, “What foods can we eat?” right? Well this is perhaps the best part of this diet. The foods that it allows you to eat are actually reasonable sized portions of foods that you are bound to already be eating. Some of the foods include fish, chicken, beef, turkey, shellfish, nuts, eggs, cheese, and vegetables. The south beach diet exercise suggest to eat three meals a day consisting of these foods as well as garden salad. The garden salad should only use 100% olive oil as a dressing. The diet is split up into three phases. All of the phases consist of eating these foods. The first phase however will get you to cut out a lot of the foods that are high in sugar including all baked goods, ice cream, beer and alcohol as well as foods like bread, rice, potatoes, and pasta. Tip#2: The best way to get your body to stop having cravings for foods that are unhealthy is to train it to crave other foods. By following the steps in tip number one and phase 1 of the south beach diet exercise, you can effectively train your body to crave the recommended foods. Some people think that this might take a long time, however in most cases this process will only take about two weeks which is the entire length of phase 1 of the diet. Tip#3: After completing phase 1 you can now move on to phase 2. The second phase of the south beach diet exercise, unlike the first phase, does not have a suggested time period. This is because the second phase should be continued until you reach your desired weight. The most important part of this phase is continuing the diet and training that you completed during phase 1 of the south beach diet exercise and as well as exercising self control for foods the foods that you cut out during phase 1. This means that phase 2 allows you to occasionally have some of the foods you cut out during phase 1 only if you feel that you can exercise self control. The good thing is that the first phase will already have conditioned your mind and body, making phase 2 extremely easy.

  • Is Strength Training a Part of Your Fitness Plan

There are many benefits for those who would want to go into strength training. This article provides general information on the benefits of strength training. Strength training can increase overall endurance as well as help maintain a well-toned and defined physique. Combining strength training with adequate rest and nutrition will surely boost your health in general. It is always best to add a day of rest between days of training. This is meant to give the body a chance to recuperate. Too much training without adequate rest will not only generate the wrong results but would end up detrimental to the long term longevity of the program. Strength training involves working the various muscles, tendons, and ligaments. There are also exercises that are aimed at improving bone density and the size of muscle tissues. As the muscles strengthen, an increase in strength and stamina will be realized. The other main benefit would be an increase in the burning of excess fat due to the increase in one's metabolic rate. One particular exercise is the lifting of weights to work muscles. Lifting weights is needed to a degree that it exhausts or fatigues the muscles they are working. In weight training, one must do repeat sets of exercises for about three times. A set involves the repetition of an exercise. An example of this is doing arm curls. If you do curls 10 times then the completion is thought of as a set. Once the sets are completed then you move on to the next set of muscles. It is also suggested to remain true to a weight workout regimen of at least three days a week, for a minimum of one half hour per day. One thing to consider is to add variety to avoid both boredom and over-repetition. It is common knowledge that people easily give up on exercise programs due to boredom or the lack of excitement that the process involves. Some examples to add diversity to your workout program is to include activities like swimming, cycling and walking. This adds to creating a well rounded regimen rather just a monotonous routine of exercises. One can also alternate the type of exercise they are doing. By adding variety the chances of having a great experience is more likely to happen. Training is meant to be enjoyed and in having a great experience one will most likely stay longer on the program.

  • Weight Loss and Exercise

A lot of us live our lives like penned animals. Built to move, too often we put ourselves in a cage. We have bodies designed for racing across the savannas, but we live a lifestyle designed for migrating from the bed to the breakfast table; to the car seat; to the office chair; to the restaurant booth; to the living room couch and back to the bed. It was not always this way. Not long ago in the United States, a man who worked on a farm did the equivalent of 15 miles of jogging every day; and his wife did the equivalent of 7 miles of jogging. Today, our daily obligations of work and home keep us tied to our chairs, and if we want exercise, we have to seek it out. In fact, health experts insist that obesity problem is probably caused at least as much by lack of physical activity as by eating too much. Hence, it is important that people need to move around. However, that does not mean that a lap or two around the old high school track will offset a daily dose of donuts. Exercise alone is not very efficient, experts say. They contend that if you just exercise and do not change your diet, you may be able to prevent weight gain or even lose a few pounds for a while. Nevertheless, it is not something that you are likely to sustain unless exercise is part of an overall program. The more regularly you exercise, the easier it is to maintain your weight. Here is what to do every day to make sure that you get the exercise you need. 1. Get quality Zzzs Make sure that you get adequate sleep. Good sleep habits are conducive to exercise, experts point out. If you feel worn out during the day, you are less likely to get much physical activity during the day. In addition, there is evidence that people who are tired tend to eat more, using food as a substance for the rest they need. 2. Walk the walk It is probably the easiest exercise program of all. In fact, it may be all you ever have to do, according to some professional advices of some health experts. Gradually build up to at least 30 minutes of brisk walking five times a week. Brisk walks themselves have health and psychological benefits that are well worth the while. 3. Walk the treadmill When the weather is bad, you might not feel like going outdoors. But if you have a treadmill in the television room, you can catch up on your favorite shows while you are doing your daily good turn for your weight-maintenance plan. Most of us watch television anyway, and indoor exercise equipment enables anyone to turn a sedentary activity into a healthy walk. 4. Seize the time Excuses aside, lack of time is certainly a limiting factor in most lifestyles. That is why health experts suggest a basic guideline for incorporating exercise into your schedule. Get as much exercise as you can that feels good without letting it interfere with your work or family life. If you need to, remind yourself that you are preventing many health problems when you prevent weight gain; and keeping your health is a gift to your family as well as yourself.

  • 2 Ingredients to Avoid While Dieting and Always

We already know that when we diet - or when we just want to eat healthier foods there are certain types of foods that we should avoid. You know - candy, cakes, cookies, chips etc. But did you know that in many foods that we think are "healthy" and good for a diet are often created with hidden dangers? When you decide to take control over your eating habits to lose weight and body fat, it is essential to avoid 2 common ingredients in processed foods: high-fructose corn syrup and trans-fats. These 2 health-robbing chemicals are present in a wide-variety of prepared foods, including baked goods, soft-drinks and salad dressings. High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a common replacement for more expensive cane sugar in a multitude of products. The reason that high-fructose corn syrup is a diet-killer is that it wreaks havoc on blood-sugar levels. High blood-sugar levels are linked to many of the conditions that plague modern life: pre-diabetes (impaired fasting blood-sugar levels) type II diabetes, and coronary heart-disease. One of the primary sources of HFCS in our diets is soft drinks. Did you know that one 48-oz."super-size" soda can contain as many as 550 calories, not to mention the equivalent of over 13 tablespoons of sugar? If you drink one of these every day for a week without reducing your caloric intake or burning off an equivalent amount of calories through exercise, you can gain a pound a week--a whopping 52 pounds a year! Replace any beverages containing HFCS with cold, refreshing water or unsweetened ice tea as a first step for weight loss. If you are a regular consumer of soda, you will lose weight by following this simple step alone. The second ingredient -Trans-fats are commonly found in baked goods such as pies, cookies, crackers and also as oil for frying goods such as french-fries or potato chips. Trans-fats were developed to ensure a long shelf-life for these types of products, but their detrimental health effects were not known at the time of their development. Trans-fats are created by taking a mono-unsaturated (liquid) fat and reacting it with hydrogen gas. The resulting fat from the reaction is solid at room temperature. When we consume trans-fats, they build up in our arteries just as grease clogs a drain. Eventually, this build up of fat in our arteries can cause coronary heart disease and stroke, and is also believed to contribute to dementia in the elderly. So how can we avoid these lethal ingredients in our foods? Our first and best line of defense is simply by reading the labels on food products. Both high-fructose corn-syrup and trans-fats are required to be listed on labels. What may surprise you is that many times one of these ingredients may be present in a "low fat" , low calorie or the 100 calorie snack packs. So be sure to read the nutrition labels!

  • Dumbbells vs Barbells- Is One Better?

Dumbbells and barbells are both significant weight gaining and muscle building tools in the gym. However, there are differences between the two. First of all the definitions are different. The dumbbell is a short bar with fixed or changeable weights mounted on each end with space in between the grip. The barbell is smaller and has a central bar that can be gripped with two hands; a barbell in each hand. The barbell is used best for its use on the flat bench press. However, whatever you can do with two dumbbells, you can also do with one barbell. This is regarding the targeting of muscles. To get power and mass, it is best to use the barbells. With the barbells, you can have the feel of supporting the weights completely with both arms. The best exercises for building muscle mass are the dead lift, squat, flat and incline press, rows, and military press. These exercises will do much for gaining strength, weight, and building muscle. The big difference in using dumbbells is that you can do a lot more of a variety of exercises mainly for defining the muscle. Using dumbbells focuses more on stabilizer muscles. The dumbbell also allows for a greater range of motion than with a barbell. Depending on which part of the body you are working out also makes a difference between dumbbells and barbells. For instance, it is best not to use both for the same muscles at the same time. For example, use a barbell for the chest muscles for a few months and then switch over to using the dumbbells. For adding mass and strength, use the barbell at lower reps, sets, and exercises. Change over to use dumbbells at the higher reps. Dumbbells work best for the shoulder, biceps, and triceps. Use them for front and side lateral raises. Concentration on hammer curls are great for biceps and the triceps could use tricep kickbacks. A dumbbell is mainly used alone, as in one arm at a time. The two barbells can be used together in a workout. There are different kinds of barbells that can be purchased. Some are made of chrome and steel, and others are made with rubber plate bells. Some have a straight bar, and others have a crooked one, for an easier grip. Dumbbells also come rubber encased as well as iron grip urethane or the chrome end caps. Free weights can also be purchased and added on. As you can see both the dumbell and barbell has its place and one is not better than the other. Just remember to use the right equipment for the right exercise.

  • Losing Weight after Pregnancy

You’ve given birth to a new baby boy or girl; congratulations! There’s no elation better. Likewise there’s little disappointment greater than that of seeing your body in the mirror after returning home from the hospital. On average, a woman gains between 25 and 35 pounds during her pregnancy. During and labor and immediately after delivery a new mother might shed 10 to 15 pounds of that. This leaves from 10 to 25 additional pounds of weight left on the new mom’s “new” body. It can be a source of great shock, disappointment, frustration, and despair to a woman to discover that after giving birth she can no longer fit into the clothes she wore prior to the pregnancy. Losing weight after pregnancy is not a fool’s errand, but neither is it an easy errand; it requires patience, a realistic attitude, a positive outlook, and when it comes down to it – persistence and dedication. A realistic outlook by any means is to expect to lose no more than 1 or 2 pounds per week. For an extra 10 to 25 pounds, then, that can take anywhere from 2 months to 2 years. There’s no quick fix to losing weight after pregnancy – not a sustainable and lasting one, at least. So the best way to succeed is to start out with realistic expectations for the time frame in which to achieve your results and with the commitment to seeing the process through, however long it may take. Now that you have the right mental attitude, let’s go over a few suggestions for ways to get rid of that unwanted weight postpartum: • Don’t start right away: Contrary to the “do it now” mentality you’re normally advised to live by, when you’ve just given birth, your body needs time to adjust to the changes it’s undergone over the preceding 9 months. Remember, you are not “returning” to the state you were in before your pregnancy; you’re in a new state you’ve never been in before. You are in the body of a new mother, and this body needs time to get used to this new way of being. Avoid weight-loss dieting of any sort for a good three months after delivering. Don’t worry about exercise so much as just being sure you remain active and moving around. You can use your menstrual cycle as an indicator of when your body is ready to take on a more intentional program of diet and exercise; when it normalizes, you’re ready to go. • Start slow: Your body is still healing from the pregnancy, and diving headlong into a heavy-duty exercise regimen may be too much of a shock to your newly-adjusting system to do you any good at all. Walking around the block or the park with your baby is an excellent way to begin, and it primes your body exquisitely for taking on more extensive and intensive exercise at a later date. • Set yourself up for success: That means keep your kitchen stocked with fresh and healthy foods, particularly snacks, so when you feel the urge to eat something, you have only suitable options around. Several smaller meals throughout the day will serve your ends far better than just 2 or 3 large meals. And don’t try and starve yourself. You’ll do no good to your new baby that way, and you’ll invariably find yourself binging sometime later on to compensate. Have patience with yourself. The period of time following pregnancy is already exhausting and exasperating enough, on so many levels. Don’t burden yourself further with guilt, shame, and unrealistic expectations. Shedding excess weight after pregnancy is not an easy task, but it can be done. Every body is different. Rather than comparing your rate of postpartum weight loss to that of any other new mother, focus on sticking to the slow and steady path to the long-lasting results you crave: a body that glows more than it ever did during or before you got pregnant.
