Cervical spine surgery is carried out to relieve pain in most cases, and also to help restore nerve functions helping relieve any numbness or tingling that may be present. There are many reasons cervical spine surgery may be recommended as the route to take, such as in cases of compressed spinal discs, but many people wonder if it is the best option.

Cervical spine surgery usually involves a piece of bone or a disc being removed from the spine and the vertebrae being fused together. Depending on the extent of the surgery, and the amount of bone that needs to be reomved or fused, metal plates or pins may also be put in place to stabilise the spine to ensure the results are long lasting and prevent further pain.

Surgery is carried out for a variety of reasons including degenerative disorders or trauma. Any situation where this is undue pressure on the spinal cord or on nerves that cannot be corrected with external treatments such as physiotherapy. Of course, as with any type of surgery there are risks associated with cervical spine surgery, and because of the nature of the surgery these tend to be more serious that complications that may arise with other types of surgery. The main worry for most people is the potential of having the spinal cord or main nerves damaged. This is of course rare, however it is a risk that has to be carefully considered and weighed up against the benefits of having surgery.

For most people the pain cause by their back problems is so severe that surgery is the only option as all other avenues have been exhausted, or it may be the case that a back injury resulting form some kind of trauma, such as a car crash or skiing accident is only treatable with surgery. While many back problems can be solved with non-invasive treatments, spinal decompression being one of the most effective when it comes to things such as compressed discs, however there will always be severe cases that can only be resolved with surgery, in which case cervical spine surgery is the best option to begin the journey to a back-pain free existence.
