Having an English bulldog for a pet is one of the most exciting and lovable experiences a dog lover could ever have. However, having an English bulldog for a pet entails more than just giving it love and a good place to sleep in. You need to make sure that your pet’s health is in tiptop shape so you can have more fun times with it.

Health concerns

As an English bulldog owner, you must know that your pet is prone to certain health issues that can become bothersome for them. However, with enough caution, you can actually prevent these issues. One of the most common is breathing problems caused by the shape and appearance of their muzzle and lower jaw, which eventually leads to snoring. The other health problems you can try to prevent from happening include interstitial cysts that can be found between the toes. Then there is the cherry eye, hip problems, and allergies that are prominent in older English bulldogs. These problems can usually be treated by an experienced veterinarian just in case your dog already has them.

Hygiene

Keeping your English bulldog healthy and happy also means that you need to mind their hygiene. It is not enough that you bathe them regularly and brush their coat with a grooming mitt to keep it shiny. You need to meticulously clean the folds on their faces to ensure that dirt and moisture won't bring about bacterial and fungal growth. Furthermore, you need to brush their teeth regularly to avoid bad breath and other tooth-related issues.

Tools of the trade

If you want to give them a bath, make sure that you are using dog shampoo for their coat. Since their coats are basically short, they are easy to maintain. In cleaning their faces, you can use a soft washcloth and dampen it with lukewarm water. If you want to brush their teeth, you can use a regular toothbrush for humans but make sure that you use a special toothpaste for them (recommended by your vet).

Exercise is a must

Just like any other dog, English bulldogs need their daily dose of exercise. Because of their short and stocky built, you need to walk them or play with them to get them to exercise. Remember that if they gain weight, it can cause more health complications related to their heart and lungs. However, they are sensitive to temperature extremities so you make sure that they do not overheat or feel too cold. Give them water from time to time and proper shade if the weather is hot or humid.
