Is Facebook the New Twitter?

If you are a social network buff like the majority of high school aged and college students, you most likely are a member of one of the major social networks. It is a means to connect with your friends, family, and others with like hobbies and interests. Fine and dandy. What I end up questioning recently is the effect that these social networks have on public and well as professional networking endeavors.

Take for example, I was watching CNN the other night and the hottest topic was that the 'former' Governor of our Seward's Folly (better known as Alaska) released a statement to the press using Facebook. Now I don't know about you, but I thought and expected to be reading this sort of ground-breaking news in the New York Times of your favorite local publication. Or how our latest and greatest President overwhelmed his competition by keeping in touch with the faithful using Twitter while on the campaign trail.

Is this to be the wave of the future, PR online through social networks on the web? I am thinking that this is going to be the case. So for all you youngin's out there (and oldin's as well), if you are a small to mid-sized PR firm, aspiring political figure, or budding entrepreneur, use these resources to your advantage!

As I digress throughout the majority of this hub, the point of this rant was to elaborate on the confusion that I have experienced when logging into my Facebook account. To my surprise, I find that people now use the platform as a micro-blog like Twitter. People use the Facebook mobile app to publish blurbs about their day and interesting things that happen in their adventures. So as tough as it may have been to get off of Facebook (or 'The Book' as it's called), now you find yourself logging in every hour on the hour to see what new snippet your best buddy has posted.

In the end, who will win the Facebook-Twitter war?
