Is God ignoring the 6th commandment with all his smiting?
55Smite you, and you, and you too
God loves and smites you!
Most of us have been told from an early age that we are to serve a loving God-Farther. The things we learn about what he wants from us seem to defy logic and even his own will.
One of the things every parent somehow knows is that their children follow their example, that means they are more likely to do what you do as opposed to what you say. Now if every parent knows that, and god knows everything, why is it that is example is one of complete intolerance, hatred, murder and fear? Forget original sin, if there is such a thing. What about God's sins? Against humanity that he so loves?
How many of you parents out there say to your kids: "Don't touch the stove!"? yes, its for their own good since they don't know any better, and you don't want your child to get hurt after all... but you eat one fruit... not because you wanted to, but because you were solicited by another adult to do it, and you are out on your fanny! left alone in a world full of evil to fend for yourself. Then when your kids call you on the phone you don't pick up.... you let them suffer. Now say your child, because of you being an absent parent, fall into the wrong circles, take drugs, indulge in lude behavior and start questioning your very existence... do you seek them out, comfort them and show them the right way... of course not!!!! You smite the little buggers ala Sodom and Gomorrah!
OK, I can hear the "but then he gave his only son to save us" fraction already.... which by the sound of things does not really up him on the parental scale as far as I'm concerned.. Imagine putting your only kid through hell for something you know for a fact he is not guilty of! Someone please put child welfare in this guy!
But that's not all! (to quote the late Billy Maise) folks... if you don't repent now, you get a free go to hell card! And its not like the good and loving farther is going to tell you exactly what the right way is... no, he will send tele-evangelists, sects, false profits, cryptic scripts, corrupt churches, esoteric nincompoops, unintelligent mean-wellers, suicidal terrorists and a whole host of other twits to tell you that "their" way is the only right way to fid salvation.
THOU SHALT NOT KILL
It does not say thou shalt not kill non believerers, nor thou shalt not kill animals, not thou shalt not kill unless you are god.... it simply says thou shalt not kill.... period!
Shalt thou condemn EVERYONE who did not happen to get the "right" message? making them grind their teeth in agony for all eternity?

Thanks Ed, really great to have another sane person around! Why don't we start a new religion? as we've discovered, as long as our book is large enough people will swallow just about anything!
From the Questions page: Lisa HW says
"The Ten Commandments I learned include the Sixth Commandment as, "Thou shalt not commit adultery" - so, no."
at the risk of repeating myself I cut and paste:
Lisa, I am humbled by your pointing out my mistake, obviously you did not read my blog on the matter.. to set the record straight, as with all doctrine claiming to be the only "Truth" I took the top 4 and averaged them:
Thou shalt not kill/ murder:
Jewish (Talmudic): 6
Orthodox: 6
Anglican, Reformed Christian: 6
Catholic, Lutheran: 5
Of course having thousands of saints, the Catholics could not really include: "You shall have no other gods before me" or making of idols, so that accounts for the mismatch. Thanks fo strengthening my argument though }:->
Just to complete the 10, since its such a round number and "the 9 Commandments" sounds more like a boygroup than a holy instruction manual, the Cath/Ltt decided to slipt out "You shall not covet your neighbor's wife and "You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor" as 2 separate laws.... so whatever you do, do no covet your neigbor's wife's stuff, you'll break 2 in one!
Lee, I love you brother. The world will always need men who can make the complicated simple. I don't know what my faith label would be. I believe in God and his human embodiment named Jesus. As for that matter it was Jesus who said all men contain God and thus are his sons and daughters. As for most of the established rules and doctrines of church and religion. I don't by any of it at all. Don't get me wrong I've read the Bible front to back and continue to do so, but I still remember that its a book of opinions and Metaphors, why metaphors, because people are often stupid and unable to understand even the most basic of truths and have to be spoon fed illustrations. Taking a step back I do see where most religions share basic concepts and truths common to all life and good sense. Why are we fighting then? Power my friend its all about power. Constantine was no fool he recognized the change in the wind of his own people. Saul, a Jewish persecutor of Christians was vastly intelligent and also no fool, he became Paul and rode the wave of Christianity to immortal fame and renown. History is full of those who seek religion as a tool for growth and influence. It's no different today. As a Christian I am told that Jesus died that I might have unlimited, personal, intimate contact with God, then why do I need a church or a pastor to tell me what I'm doing wrong or to list the criteria for my acceptance into heaven. Did not Jesus say Judge not? How quickly we as Christians ignore our own scripture and tenants to spread a message of judgment and persecution of all who disagree. One thing to consider, as the Bible says we are all God's children, woe to any man that judges one of God's loved ones regardless of what they may worship and believe. Did God not create all, then he created the Muslim and Hindu too and for a purpose and reason, to accomplish something bigger then one faith or church.
If you are a Christian then stop quoting the Ten Commandments and the Old Testament, yes it is full of valuable teachings and stories, but wake up and get the message, you are no longer under the old law or commandments. You serve two rules now, Love God first and always, and love each other. Do this and you will not need to follow the old ten. Christ came to free you from a mountain of rules and customs no man could fulfill why do we continually go back to them, every time we do we nullify Christ's sacrifice and it's meaning. Sorry Lee didn't mean to turn this into a rant. Most of what I read from those who are angry and skeptical about faith and religion is the result of tremendous misuse of the scripture and teachings by zealots who really care little for faith or truth. Religion is not about God its about men and their ego seeking the ability to ever place themselves higher then the masses. Religion is the death of faith and the beginning of slavery.
You have no idea how long I have waited for someone catch on to that Scott... strange how few Christians really got the message and are still defending the exact and true nature of the old testament.
It was after all Jesus that re-introduced beacon into our diets, and even if I will always remain skeptical, I am at least thankful for that.
Stay alert my friend
Truth is unbiased and cares little for the feelings of others, as such it cuts both ways. Truth is also the highest form of knowledge. I believe that more then any other thing Jesus spread the need to ask questions and seek the truth. I feel people get too caught up in his divinity and forget that he was also a tremendous teacher and advocate for change and questioning. Jesus was a revolutionary and urged the common man to rise up and cast off the chains of ignorance and oppression. He was also executed for the threat he represented to the established power bases of both Rome and The Jewish leaders. After all he was preaching a message that they had no real power or authority and thus should be ignored and not feared.
However he may have wrapped the message the meaning was the same, revolution and rebellion. His charge of blasphemy and heresy was a pretense and means to an end. Jesus had to go, before his message against the leaders in Jerusalem got too far. I admire the man that sees injustice and hypocrisy and is willing to speak out against it. This is the essence of faith and love. Truth can not be silenced or covered over.
This is possibly one of your better hubs, I love it totally takes a different way of thinking, and yet, it's not "fighting" which makes me like it all teh more.
Thanks Rebecca, glad you like it. I really would prefer a world in which people don't constantly fight, but its not always avoidable. I have seen enough violence to last a few lifetimes, thus I despise when people justify it using some religious motivation.
Take care,
LB
Hey there redman with horns. All of your hubs are completely hysterical.
I think that although you do not place yourself in any religious or non-religious sect, then you may be a little like me. You may believe that there is an answer and a creator, but nothing can be considered pure proof of what that answer or creator may be. The universe could have just farted us out as the Big Bang Theory would have us believe, in which case the universe itself would be our God. We could have come from another world (I don't personally think it plausible, but what do I know), if we did then who created those ancestors and do they have a bible? If am to believe in a God (which I do), then my God is like me. My God is fallible, yet loving. Can my God tell me what to do in this life, certainly not, no more than I will be able to tell my children what to do when they are my age. I often question the life span of my God though, perhaps he or she or it died after creating my ancestors. Maybe that is why he or she or it cannot be here to control or guide my ways.
Alright now I'm rambling and no longer making any sense to myself. Time to go. Thanks for the hub. Keep it up. Oh and thanks for the "cute" email. It made me smile.

Excellent! If common sense was valued as much as the smoke that preachers and televangelists blow up people's asses then guys like you and I would be rolling in money instead of those pious know-nothing morons. This world is so damn backwards, but I guess that's why these beliefs are so popular.
