Is Grigor Dimitrov the new Roger Federer?

Talk in the tennis fraternity is hot. Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov is the name on many lips, and for good reason. As everyone in the tennis world enjoyed what is arguably the greatest match in history on Wimbledon Men's final day in 2008, Grigor raced to the junior title beating Henri Kontinen 7-5, 6-3. Two months later, he'd captured the junior US Open crown.
Grigor is now moving into mainstream men's tennis and is already causing a stir. For example, Grigor features heavily on YouTube producing extraordinary tennis against Rafael Nadal. In another match with France's Gilles Simon, he served for the match before coming unstuck, and again played a convincing match against the Frenchman at Queens in June.
Anyone with an eye for on court tennis style will immediately warm to this guy. His ability is a given. I've tried to summarise Grigor's potential below:
- At Rotterdam 2009, Grigor attracted the talent of Peter Lundgren, former coach of Marat Safin and Roger Federer.
- Previous to Lundgren, Grigor was coached by his father, but later and most notably, by Pato Alvarez, who also coached Andy Murray. Alvarez has stated Grigor is the best 17 year old he's ever coached.
- Alarmingly, Lundgren has been quoted saying Grigor is better than Federer was at his age.
Next time Grigor Dimitrov is in an event, make sure to watch is matches. Any fans of the mechanics of shot making will notice immediately that Grigor has a carbon copy of Roger Federer's forehand.
Also, his server has Federer's same qualities with the platform stance and identical motion. Watching replays of his serving and shotmaking is strangely unnerving.
Lundgren's comparison may partly be down to bad feeling from way back. But I wonder if Federer's secrets are stored somewhere in Lundgren's soul and he now has a chance to exorcise them through another player. Dimitrov certainly looks like a player with the talent to test this theory.
