On a recent job in Collierville, designer Ami Austin of Ami Austin Interiors worked a miracle in the guest bath. The miracle came in the fact that although the room looked lavish, it didn't exceed the client's modest budget for the space."We did a Venetian plaster treatment on the walls, then we took off the existing mirror and used an antique mirror she already had, along with two sconces ...

Kitchen cabinets are a blessing in the name of storage space. Therefore, you should take care of them and maintain them to derive maximum utility out of them. Although the kitchen is the place that you probably spend the least amount of time, it gets dirty the quickest. This is because of the nature of activities that go on in there. The oil, food articles and dust from the air mixed with oil specks during cooking form ugly coatings on everything inside the space. Your kitchen cabinets are not spared either.

While checking out the latest kitchen appliances and hardware you may feel sorry for your own kitchen cabinets which look like they spent years in a dungeon or were used as a fire place in the 16th century. However, stripping them off completely and fitting in the latest designs is not the only way to refurbish your kitchen.

Remember the three ways to a brand new kitchen:

  1. Replace
  2. Reface
  3. Refinish

The first option will cost you the most as this means tearing down all the hardware and appliances fitted into your kitchen space and replacing them with brand new ones. Not only is this a labor intensive process, but also requires heavy machinery investment. You have to buy new cabinets and chimneys and replace the old ones. You also have to fit in convenient electrical circuits to suit the latest designs.

Instead of going to such extreme lengths you should turn to refacing or refinishing your kitchen instead.

  • Take off all the fixtures and cabinets and disintegrate them into their basic parts.
  • Clean them up completely. Hire professional kitchen cleaners for the job if you don’t want to make the effort yourself.
  • Replace things like the lose knob, the broken glass and the rusty hinges.
  • Scrub off the old paint or varnish and coat it with polyurethane and/or stain before applying a fresh coat of your favorite color of paint.

If you need to buy a few new additions to your kitchen cabinets you can check out garage sales and other lumber discount deals to buy them for cheap.
