Is Trying to Make Money with Adsense like "Straightening Deck Chairs on the Titanic?"

Once in a while I come across a metaphor that is so wonderfully visual, so evocative of an image that explains "more than a thousand words" that I cannot resist storing it up in the ol' brain keg for future use.
The book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey is full of just such metaphors.
For Covey, a primary mistake in life is "majoring in minor things."
He says that the problem is often not that we focus on bad things to the exclusion of good things, but that WE FOCUS ON GOOD THINGS TO THE EXCLUSION OF BETTER THINGS.

This is an important, and very wise, thing to say.
For example, if we focus too much on money to the exclusion of our relationships, then our relationships suffer.
On the other hand, if we focus too much on spiritual goals like learning how not to be too materialistic, then our finances can suffer.
Money is important, though not as important than people. Money is not bad, it is good, it is just not supreme.
Similarly, spirituality is important, but spirituality will not feed your kids. In this context, again, spirituality is not in itself bad, but it might get in the way if you're trying to support a family (by spirituality I mean here non-materialism, NOT morality -- I would have thought that morality should ALWAYS be the supreme value).
What has this to do with Adsense, and with the deck chairs on the Titanic?
Deck Chairs and Adsense
If your goal is to make money then your first task IS TO RESEARCH HOW BEST TO DO THIS.
It is NOT to ASSUME that Adsense, for example, is the best way to make money online.
In my view (and I am happy to be corrected), Adsense is not THE BEST way to make money online , it is simply a GOOD way to make money online.
In short, if you want to make money online, your focus should be MAKING MONEY ONLINE IN GENERAL.
This should be your focus, NOT Adsense specifically.
In other words, Adsense is GOOD, but making money online in general is BETTER, as a topic of focus.
In Either Case..

Good Point. I think Adsense is a great way to start to monetize a site, just add the adsense code, get some traffic and you'll be making money, but I don't think it is the best long term strategy. With a little more effort you can be making a lot more money with the same traffic with just a little more effort, through affilaite programs, other ad networks, and your own products and services. Adsense is a good start to making money online though
