Why Yahoo answers free?

In Economics, it's called "elasticity of demand." The moment they start charging is the moment they lose their users.

As stated by someone, Yahoo generates revenue via advertisements. That's what pays for their investment in Yahoo Answers.

Google TRIED to have a paid answers site and failed miserably. Yahoo Answers basically put it out of business. Now that it is so popular, there are advertisements on here (there never were when it first started!). It is the sponsors that pay for this advertising space that support Yahoo Answers.

Because they know they'll lose a lot of their users that way. They make money through advertising. You probably don't realize it, but it's well integrated into this site.

They'll probably offer added features later on which are subscription-based, but the object for them right now is to gain user traction similar to social networking sites.

Trsmd , I don't think yahoo will charge users for yahoo answer service because if they do so they will fail miserably.

There are lot of players out there in this question answer domain. Answerbag is one of them. Answerbag has a large number of active users.Yahoo answers now has a lot of spam.If some sites come up with revenue sharing and other incentives for users for asking and answering questions , then there is a strong chance that people would jump from yahoo answers.Chaging for sharing knowledge is a bad practise. I think so.

I appreciate hubpages for providing free information and also paying a share of its revnue to users.

Here's a site similar to yahoo answers which shares 75 percent ad revenue to users.

So no question of yahoo answers being a paid site ? They cant charge users .Because its the users who contribute content and they earn money from advertising.
