Aspartame in Your Diet Soda May be Killing You

I just opened up my email from Dr. Mercola and there was a link to an article about Aspartame in diet soda. It tells about a woman that wanted visual proof of the effects of aspartame because her family was addicted to diet soda. She was convinced that she would see tumors or more worse death in her experiment on rats. So she started our with 108 rats. One group of 30 males and 30 females were fed 2 packets of NutrSweet dissolved in 8 ounces of water every 24 hours. The other group of 24 males and 24 females were givien regular water. Each group were fed the same. The duration of the experiment lasted 2 years and 8 months until the spontaneous death of the animals.

Go here to read the full report on the study. But a word of caution, the pictures are not for the weak stomach.

Diet Soda Information

Here is some information on diet soda and how she figured on the amount to feed the rats in her study.

A 12-oz diet soda has about 180 mg of aspartame, 15 mg of aspartame per oz., the amount in approximately 4.5 packets of NutraSweet.

According to the industry-run Aspartame Information Center website, a conservative estimate of the maximum dose of aspartame for humans per day, the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI), as set by the FDA, is 50 mg/kg, approximately twenty cans of 12-ounce diet soda for a 150 lb. adult and six 12-ounce cans for a 50-pound child. Tabletop sweetener ADI is 97 packets for an adult and 32 packets for a child.

The animals in my study weighed on the average of 1 pound for males and 0.66 pounds for females. The ADI for the males was 16.9 mg and for the females 13.5 mg

To put these numbers into perspective, the aspartame received by my rats daily, was equivalent to two-thirds the aspartame contained in 8-oz of diet soda.

More Tumors on Rats

Dr. Hull's aspartame poisoning.

I was diagnosed with an ‘incurable' case of Grave's Disease, a fatal thyroid disorder, I never really had Grave's Disease but my doctors were convinced I did. I had aspartame poisoning with symptoms of 'textbook‘ Grave's Disease caused by aspartame saturating my foods."

Dr. Janet Starr Hull wrote "Sweet Poison": How The World's Most Popular Artificial Sweetener is Killing Us.

One of the symptoms of Grave's Disease is protruding eyes. This is a no-longer private e-mail from Dr. Hull to Carol Guilford.

"YES, I had protruding eyes, cystic acne, and my hair was falling out in clumps. I had gained 30 pounds, too. ALL that went away within a year from stopping all aspartame. I even had holes in my retina from the methanol, and those have closed up now. All backed up by my eye surgeon."

If you go to Dr. Hull's web site, sweetpoison.com you will learn more.

On a lighter note- the only thing that 100% causes cancer in lab rats everytime is the scientists.

Hmmmm. I only drink diet coke. It's the only way I can get my daily dose of caffeine! I wonder what they effect would have been if she had used the water as the control and then ran set of suger and asp. It would have been more conclusive. Water has been proven to be good for us, so I fail to see the point of only using water and then the asp solution. I don't think it will turn me off drinking diet coke though. I'm FAR too addicted!

I guess those cute bunnies on the 7-UP commercial don't stand a chance if they're drinking diet!

Good Hub--I agree though. Aspartame is lethal and should be banned but the diet food/food industry is to powerful to let that happen.

Aspertame is poison. I stopped using it cold turkey two weeks ago today, my cystic acne cleared almost instantly. Also gone are the shortness of breath and heart palpitations. It's scary to know I've been slowly poisoning my body for the past twenty years and it was legal for the food industry to sell this stuff!

It's certainly food for thought (no pun intended)! I've gone through a real journey with aspartame as well...don't really know who to trust, but I know I do feel better now.

You do realise that feeding rats diet coke is the worst thing you can do, as they cant burp or pass wind, surely a intelligent person would know this, no wonder the poor things got tumors!

I have heard this before, but there are other studies out there that so the adverse affects as aspertine. Also, during the test they may have let the carbon release before giving it to the rats. I will have to do some investigating.

Very informative. I gave up diet soda after drinking it and regular soda since childhood in great quantities. I easily had a six pack a day habit, sometimes more in the summer. Eliminating it from my diet two years ago was the best thing I ever did.
