There are times an online High School program can be a good choice for your child. If your child is not offered a challenging curriculum at their local public school nor has difficulty keeping up the pace at the local public school an online high school may be a good alternative. There are both public (charter) and private online High Schools and you and your student should be prepared to do extensive research to find one that meets your students needs and future career goals.
Most online high school like most private schools is somewhat exempted from government regulation. They set their own admission and graduation requirements. Some are accredited by private or church related organizations .These schools differ in what the value of their accreditation really means. You should look for schools that have regional accreditation from organizations that accredited brick and mortar schools. You must also check the accreditation with your state's board of education. I would also advise that your child check the acceptability of an online school, they plan to attend with organizations they may plan to deal with after high school. The military cans be very choosy about the online diploma's accept as can many colleges. You need to inquire from the organizations that your child plans to involve themselves with after graduation. Do not take the online school's word about the acceptability of their diplomas. If you are not sure what type of college your child wishes to attend you can ask the online school for the names of Universities and trade schools that have accepted their online diplomas. You will need to check with the individual universities and school the online school has said accepts their diploma's just to be on the safe side.
There are many online High School programs associated with online career schools and if you think that these will help meet your child's post graduation goals these schools are some of the most reasonably priced for both your child's high school and post high school education. Be aware these policies of these school's vary a great deal in regards to accepting credits from other schools. Some will accept no credits and wish your student to use their program start to finish for a diploma. Others charge a fee for credits transferred from another school. A warning that most brick and mortar schools also do no accept credits from online high schools. I feel this will change as more and more students begin taking classes on line. If your student is only expecting and attending online school to gain a few credits I would ask the brick and mortar school what online credits they are likely to accept. This should be done before any online credits are paid for as many real world schools will not take any online class credits.
Most online high schools are not as expensive as private schools, but because you are solely responsible for text books and software for your student the costs can add up. You must be careful of diploma mills that for a low price will have your student take a test and issue a diploma. These diplomas are not worth the paper they are written on and are not equivalent to your state's GED. It takes time to finish high school in the real world and legitimate online schools require you invest time for a diploma as well.
You should check if your state offers an online public school. Most of these schools have a very short enrollment window but you do not have to worry about accreditation, transfer of credits, or high tuition costs. These schools can also accommodate learning disabled and gifted students in way many online programs cannot. Most of the online schools can be found under a list of charter schools for your community. Many provide a computer if needed besides textbooks and lab supplies.
Online schools will improve in the future as more and more students take advantage of the opportunity for distance learning that the Internet offers. In the mean time planning to attend online high school is a process that requires much thought for both you and the student. The transition from real time classroom to an online classroom is one that most computer savvy students make easily. Making sure that they are receiving a quality on line education is something that parents need to take charging of.
