If we could turn back time
As I look with dismay and horror at the state of the world today it often occurs to me that it really was better when I was a child. It really was better when I was a teenager and young man too, perhaps not so in my personal life but in the world at large.
It is as if the more development and the more technology and progress we have had the worse everything as got in so many ways. I am certain you can think of many examples.
Diseases like all the forms of cancer that are killing people today were a rarity in my youth. Yes, the disease existed and was known as a serious threat to life but you were unlikely to actually personally know anyone who suffered or died from it.
Nowadays it is the reverse with the news full of reports of famous people who are being treated for cancer or have finally lost their lives to the disease. In our personal social circles there can be few of us who have not lost friends who died from cancer or who do not know of people who are battling the condition.
We are told that medical science has advanced by leaps and bounds and that it is possible now to cure many things that they were unable to years back but if we look around it seems that there are far more people with serious illnesses and poor health. So why would that be?
The world was a lot safer 30 or 40 years back, and even 10 or 20 years ago it was not as dangerous as it has become. Yes, the media paints a depressing picture and can easily make you think that things are a lot worse than they appear but nevertheless the violent crimes, the terrible catalogue of abuses against people and animals, the mindless vandalism that spoils so many places are all very real.
People didn't used to be scared to go out in their neighbourhoods or to go to a the city centre after dark but they have become so in many locations today.
Then there's the matter of home security and the businesses that sell it. If there really wasn't so much burglary and crime people would not want all the locks and alarms they have nowadays. The threat from malicious callers and thieves is there. It didn't used to be that way!
There are many reasons the world has got into the mess it is in and I am of the opinion that it has been deliberately engineered that way by the elite controllers of society. It is part of their New World Order plan to create "order out of chaos". First they create that chaos.
It is like David Icke so often has pointed out with the formula: "Problem-Reaction-Solution". This means that you create a problem, wait for the response from the public which is usually "something must be done," and then offer a solution to something you caused in the first place.
An example would be to encourage crime by increasing poverty, promoting a "must-have" consumer mindset and using media messages that make being some sort of a crook appear as something desirable to young people, eg. with Gangsta rap music, gang culture and "hoodies." Then when you have people complaining about all the robberies and street crime you offer the solution: tighter police controls and increased surveillance with close-circuit TV cameras.
It is not only in human affairs, because out in the natural world all is not well too. Species are vanishing at a truly alarming rate and many once common animals and plants are now endangered. The environment is under attack. Not only are we losing forests, moors, wetlands and wild flower meadows but the sea is filling up with plastic and other forms of pollution.
I remember as a boy that Common Lizards were once common. I could find them on the railway bank and on hedge banks by where I lived but not any more. All three species of British newt - the Common Newt, the Palmate Newt and the Great Crested Newt - were all found in various ponds in the neighbourhood. Several of these ponds no longer exist.
Caterpillars of moths like the big furry ones known as Woolly Bears that after pupation become the very colourful Garden Tiger Moth, used to often be seen running across back lanes or nibbling holes in the rhubarb. Now they are a species listed as disappearing fast from its past range. Butterflies too are vanishing fast, and bees worldwide.
There are many reasons why nature is having a hard time of it. Besides the obvious loss of actual habitats there are far more people using harmful herbicides like Monsanto's Roundup as well as more pesticides. The book Silent Spring by Rachel Carson was a grim warning against this and how we are losing so many birds that it really is becoming devoid of birdsong in many places, so why are people so keen to poison the land?
I really think we need to go backwards, backwards into a simpler way of life, back to a world that didn't have so many gadgets and scientific advancements but was a lot happier and healthier. Back to a world of organic farming and good old-fashioned food.
I have been thinking a lot about plastic pollution recently. It is a really serious matter. There Great Pacific Garbage Patch in the ocean is said to be as big as Texas and it is made mostly of plastic.
In some parts of the sea there are six parts of plastic to every one part of plankton. The sand is becoming full of plastic particles. Marine creatures have to swallow this, other marine animals like turtles and seabirds die directly from eating plastic in the form of floating bags that they mistake for food such as jellyfish.
Explorer and adventurer David de Rothschild is currently on an expedition on a catamaran made out of recycled plastic bottles to highlight the problem and raise awareness. He is sailing the Plastiki right past the Great Garbage Patch.
So why do we have so much plastic in the first place? Why can't we go back to glass bottles?
Somebody said to me that today it would be said by the "Nanny State" that glass is more dangerous because it can be used in crimes of violence. I don't think that is a totally valid argument.
Where I live in Tenerife it is still normal to get served with glass glasses and glass bottles at a bar and reports of anyone being hurt from an assault using glass are very rare indeed. I don't think I have seen or heard of one.
So what does that mean? Are people better behaved in a culture that still uses glasses and glass bottles? It seems they once were elsewhere too.
Glass bottles were returnable and could be used again. There used to be refunds on them and people were encouraged to take them back to the supplier to get the money back on them. That system worked well.
Why are so many foods packaged in plastic? They didn't used to be. Fruit and veg were not sold pre-packaged. The idea that the food is more hygienic doesn't stand up well. People were healthier without all this packaging.
And why do we need plastic water bottles? Why do we need to buy water? Why can't the authorities produce clean healthy water in the first place? Why are there not public drinking fountains about like there used to be?
Why do people feel a need to drink and buy bottled water? Well, for a start because tap water often has fluoride in it. Many members of the population do want to consume this poison so why are we forced to have it?
The answer is for fluoride not to be added to public water supplies in the first place. It didn't used to be so why can't we go back to like it was in those days?
In fact why can't we return to a whole lot of much healthier ways of the past? "If I could turn back time..." as the song by Cher goes.

Thanks for this Hub. You are so right about so many things here. We have lost respect for ourselves and the earth but I do believe there's a small ray of hope.
Thank you for your prompt responses, Green Lotus and Suzie!
Good hub, I enjoyed reading it! I think that one of the biggest problems of our time is advertising, followed by consumption.
Yes, I agree! People are being constantly told they need to buy something or other including a load of stuff that they don't need. It is all part of the capitalist and consumerist madness! We need to reverse it somehow.
People do not think for themselves much any more. They take too much notice of advertising and listen to their egos, which prevent them from making balanced choices. Also I think that people do not want to give up such conveniences as all of the gadgets. For example, in the modern kitchen you can find so many alternative gadgets for cooking food as well as the cooker. These include a separate electric steamer (instead of a pan with a metal colander on the top, a popcorn maker (instead of a pan on the hob), a separate healthy grill , like a George Foreman, instead of a griddle pan on the hob,a microwave oven ( which I think are a health hazard) an electric fryer instead of a chip pan on the hob, which rarely catch light if you watch them carefully, a toaster, instead of using the grill on your cooker, electric kettles instead of the old fashioned whistling one on the hob, etc. I'm sure your readers can think of more gadgets. These are not only a drain on resources for their power supply and their production, but these are constantly re designed so people buy more, and often they have a high amount of plastic in their manufacture and they take up so much room in the kitchen!!
Great feedback, Lou! I agree and yes, microwaves are harmful. I would rather a healthy way of life than all that stuff!
Hi, Bard!
I "hear" ya! The world sure is in a huge mess.
At the same time, development, technology and progress are not to be blamed because human behavior...bad behavior...is the culprit. Always was and always will be.
Diseases were rare in our youth (we're about the same age) because at that time there had been few, if any, pandemics....but polio was a crippler and a killer. The polio epidemic is what I remember. Also, the medical field came up with a way to test for TB during our youth...and finally, by that time. They used one of my homeroom classes (including me, of course) as the "pioneers" of the TB test. All of us survived...including the one kid who tested positive. Since then, many more are saved by this test and we were saved more spread of TB at that time. We were fortunate on this.
Regarding cancer then and cancer now:
One of my grandfather's passed on from cancer...there was no cure at that time. And whereas my mom passed on from the results of cancer treatment, I know a nice man who had the treatment and survives today. Also, I know another nice man who took the treatment, it didn't help, and so he went "organic"...which ended up curing him. So, I'd say there are more chances of surviving cancer today then back when we were kids. Just an observation.
I feel serious illnesses and poor health...depending...can be caused by poor lifestyles, or environmental factors, etc. If so, then I feel it's up to the individual whether or not to take personal responsibility for his/her wellbeing. Now, I'm not talking Type I diabetes and other hereditary conditions, of course. I'm talking situations like that nice man who organically cured himself of cancer. It's been done by others too, so it can be done by many others...those who take personal responsibility for themselves.
Crime has always been with humankind, unfortunately and as you say, there are places where there is more crime. But, crime can happen any where. Remember Jack the Ripper?...and other serial murderers throughout history? That doesn't excuse crime but, as stated, crime has always been with humankind.
I agree that everyone must take personal responsibility for whatever land they own as far as cleaning the Earth.
I also agree about the elitist group(s). I've been urging my fellow Americans to vote out incumbents who behave like elitists, e.g., don't listen to the majority of Americans, those who voted them in and can...and must...vote them out.
Thanks for your thoughts on this, Tina! I am a great believer in taking responsibility for our own health too and using alternative treatments.
Yes there has always been some crime but not like it is today so that communities of people fear break-ins and worse and city centres become no-go areas!
According to our style of life, many areas became overcrowded with people who do not know how to behave. If it is up to me, this world could live (almost) without plastic, but this stupid material is not possible to avoid.
I have recently watched on TV about plastic garbage in Pacific, here is still not like that....
Here we also still serve in bars and restaurants glass bottles and have glassess from glass, and we consider that as normal.
Thank you for excellent Hub, Bard.
I believe in climate change, which will return us on "green path" again...
Thank you for your comments, Tatjana!
I am glad glass still gets used where you are. It proves it can still be done and that it isn't necessary!
Sadly plastic is used in so many every day items and other places. Just looking around me now I see plastic glasses frames, plastic CD cases, plastic PC mouse and keyboard, plastic biro, plastic microphone holder, plastic watchstrap and all that's without leaving my seat!
I sort of agree although I do think that we wear rose coloured glasses a bit.
I was brought up in a small two beroomed home with no bathroom or inside loo. We would play on the bombies which were bomb sites left over from world war two. My mum born in 1917 had rickitts as a child and did not walk until she was gone four. This was due to a poor diet through lack of income etc.etc
I loved your hub. You are so correct on the points you have made. Here in America I am a member of the SCA which is a renaissance recreation group. We do everything authentic to the renaissance period. I love it! Everyone helps each other, we barter etc. I would love to live that way always. It is such a simple way of life.
Thank you for posting, Ethel and Sarra!
Sarra, I know if I had the choice I would opt for the old way!
I agree that we could live simpler lives and that working harder and longer is not really in the interests of most people who could swap money for more leisure time etc.
But I don't agree that life is worse than it was 30 or 40 years ago when the world was dangerously divided and we stood a chance of nuclear war. Certainly not 70 years ago when we were actually embroiled in a world war.
True, for some people things might have gotten worse but for most people it's hard to see how better technologies, longer lifespans and wealthier societies have made things worse.
Humans have already tried a 'simpler' way of life, it's called the pre-modern era. Life was nasty, violent and short. It's difficult to see how we could radically alter our economies to go back to mass subsistence farming without a serious proportion of humanity dying in the process.
Finally, to be blunt, David Icke is not exactly a great commentator to cite, given that he's insane enough to think that he's the Son of God and that the British Monarchy are actually giant lizards from space. I'm not a great fan of the monarchy either, but I at least accept they are human!
"True, for some people things might have gotten worse but for most people it's hard to see how better technologies, longer lifespans and wealthier societies have made things worse."
These people you are speaking of are a minority on the planet - the majority do not enjoy these benefits!
As for Icke, he makes good sense to my way of thinking and I hold his work in high regard as you will find from other hubs devoted to him.
What a great "thinking hub!" I often wonder the same things. I remember returning to the states after a year in Europe and there were no sounds of birds for a while.....it was so strange because it was Spring? The world has definitely changed. I often worry about my children riding their bikes in the neighborhood.
We live in a really nice neighborhood, but it just does not matter! The worry is always there. I do blame the news on television for some of my paranoia!! ;
Best, GPAGE

I wholeheartedly agree with your words of wisdom. The careless self-destruction of the planet, spiraling negative media and the very real workings of the New World Order is both terrifying and tragic. Spreading awareness such as what you are doing here gives one a ray of hope. Thanks and thumbs up.
