being responsible about the oceans

There is emerging evidence, louder and louder, that if something radical isn;t donequickly, the oceans will die in about 2048. Just like in the movie soylent green. what will kill them? stupidity and greede by human beings.

the fad tendency to consider some fish the "in dish" at restaurants, the refusal of politicians to admit that the oceans are a world, not national resource, the willfull over poaching, the failure to protect those who can no longer makea living fishing in the old ways, the failure to understand linkages between speicies, combined with run-off of everyhting from mercury to ddt all combine.

in the meantime, there are ocean foods reasonable to eat.

Anchovies (all varieties) (one of my favorites...espeiocally on pizza)

Atlantic Herring (U.S. and Canada) (always great at the holidays)

Oysters (farmed) (farming the oceans is slowly becoming real)

Alaskan Sablefish (i have no idea...)

Black Cod (tasty)

Alaskan Salmon (wild) (trying to come back, and getting help)

Sardines (a traditional of working people world wide)

Worst Fish

Chilean Sea Bass (o so chic)

Toothfish (high on the chain, so full of poison)

Grouper (same)

Marlin (same and over fished like mad)

Orange Roughy (overfished(

Rockfish (Pacific) (needed to eat other stuff)

Rock Cod (Pacific) (same)

Atlantic Salmon (overfished, and filled with david letterman re-runs)

Shark (needed to eat other things)

Sturgeon (wild) (almost extinct)

Swordfish (imported) (all of the above, except david letterman)

Tilefish (rare)

Bluefin Tuna (almost extinct)
