Is it better to use a free blogging service or set up a registered domain

A combination of both
I agree to a certain extent with Danni. There positive aspect of free blogging in that it will usually have a a highpage rank. However, you will not be able to add adsense, except with Hubpages. Now, I have free hosting wizardhost.biz and I can download wordpress from my c-panel site software and add my plugins, feedburnersmith, share-this and ultimate Tag Warrior, make some widgets, put those widget RSS's around social networks. I can individualize my template from thousands of templates available from Wordpress. The advantage of having your own hosted blog is that you can, over a period of time build up your readership. There are certain communities that will only allow you to add your blog if it is hosted, like blog catalog and Technorati. With free hosting, you can also add videos.

okay. Thanks for sharing.
I havent currently setup a website but although i have many account on free hosting services but its reall hardwork you really have to put in your best before publishing your website
If you have penty of value added services like (widgets nd templates ) are avialable then use ur own hosting. Other wise use blogger it is easy for non techies.
I say, purchase a domain name from a "godaddy" or similar. The larger companies will provide you a free hosting site. I personally don't like these because you have to endure their google ads. Which means they get the adwords profits, you don't. Besides, it also pulls credibility from the supposed free standing site.
But I digress. Next you can use, forgive me if I get the term wrong, but I think it's a forwarding or masking type of service. You essentially mask your blog with your new official "yourdomainname.com"
I suggest this because it gives you a bit of credibility. And in the meantime, while you still have a web presence, you can learn to build a site or you can save the moolah it takes to hire the right professional.
No problem, I have about 20 domain names with 1and1.co However with the free hosting i mentioned I was able to choose my domain name, like "xxxxx.890m.com" Here's one http://drbobbiannewhite.890m.com I also own the domain name drbobbiannewhite.com which is my name, so I can simply make a frame redirect to the former. By the way the free hosting that I am offering does not advertise on your site, It is a c-panel and is the same as the c-panel that i paid for and still have

Actually, you can use adsense at Blogger, which is owned by Google.
