Brining a new puppy to your home

I know people that have cats and all kinds of critters. I know some one who brought a puppy into their home that has adualt cats. It takes time for the cats to get used to a new member in the house. If the cats were not terrorized by any dogs than the cats will get used to the puppy. As the owner of the cats you need to train your puppy not to chase them. In order to do this you need to introduce the puppy to the cats gradually. Do not leave the puppy alone to much with the cats at first. let the cats go to the puppy while you hold him. Puppies are a big responsability and should be looked after properly. If you treat the puppy and the cats equal they will start to get used to eachother. This takes about 6 weeks to train the puppy to be good with the cats. Remember that the cats can run faster than the puppy because the pup is still a little clumsy and has a harder time running. If the cats want nothing to do with the puppy, They will most times ignore that there is a small dog there. Make sure that the puppy and cats sleep seperate unless the cats go to him and sleep beside him on their own. You and your pets will be alright and happy as long as you show your pets that you love them.

Thanks for this, Brian. I think you're absolutely right that the key is to train the puppy right from the start not to chase the cats.

I've read a little about Clicker Training for dogs, so that might be the way to go.

Do you know anything about that?

It can be a scarry thing but remember that if the cat is teh problem it will learn soon enough. What kind of dog do you have?? If he is going to be a bigger do the cat will learn to share its home if he is a small dog there is still no worries because the smaller dogs seem to be able to adapt.

Very good advice indeed :) I have a friend who's in the process of introducing a sheppy puppy into a house with three adult cats - so far they've been tolerant of it, including one they thought would be very skittish :)

I'll be sure to point them in the direction of your hub should they require any more helpful info :)
