Is it possible to crave a cigarette when you've never smoked before? Are you craving the effects of the cigarette?

Yes, and probably.

In the first part, nicotine has a high potential for causing a strong physical dependency. Whether you, yourself, are smoking, or you are inhaling second hand smoke, you are injesting nicotine, and it is probably just as likely that you could form a physical dependency from second hand smoke as you could from directly smoking.

In the second part, there is a reason that people smoke. I know, I was a smoker for somewhere around 15+ years. It doesn't matter if you have a cigarette in your mouth, you're chewing tobacco, or you are constantly around smokers. You will have the same effect, to one degree or another, as the individual who is actually consuming the tobacco. Of course, if you are a non-smoker, you will find out quickly that breathing second hand smoke and inhaling a cigarette are two very different experiences. In any case, if you are a non-smoker who spends time around smokers, and you're craving a cigarette, well, yeah, you're craving the effects of the cigarette.

Keep in mind the addiction and dependency come from ingestion of nicotine, not some dried plants wrapped up in paper.

I never thought about second hand smoke. Wow. My boyfriend smokes a lot. I've never had cravings before, so it was odd. Thank you

Gd pt, I can't think who I may have been around who was smoking, but like you say, 2nd hand smoke is powerful too, and I think that we had the windows open that night so i think those 2 may be connected!

oddly I searched on google and found this blog because I've found myself craving cigarettes more and more in the past few months, even though I never even had a drag from a cigarette in my life and no one in my family or friends circle smokes. And yet I enjoy the smell of cigarette smoke more and more each day, it seems. And the scariest is that it feels like it's coming from within, not just a "that smells good" kind of thing. I feel like I really, really want to breath more of it. Confused.

Well, if that's the sort of thing that confuses you, have fun with that.
