The Toyota Avalon is one of the Best Used Cars
I’ll admit it… I don’t like small cars. I like big roomy comfortable quiet luxury sedans. I don’t have a Budget for a BMW 7 Series so I’ve been reading reviews on what the car industry magazines are saying about today’s cars. I know General Motors and Ford have been flooding our TV Screens with images of their new models and claims about improved quality, buyer protection, and reasons why we should jump on board. I’m not convinced.
So I started digging into what is important to me and the Toyota Avalon came out on top. Now to scrape together the down payment… nah I’m looking for a good used car. And because I don’t drive much I’m not terribly concerned about mileage. For a car of this size 28 Highway and 19 City is actually not too bad! And now here in Nevada you don’t have to pay sales tax on private party transactions so that’s a big bonus!
Here is what convinced me to look for a Good Used Toyota Avalon
Edmunds.com
Its price of entry may be higher than it’s rivals’, but if your’e looking for the most refined, best-built full0size sedan in the $30,000 price bracket, you need lok no further than the 2009 Toyota Avalon.
Not surprisingly, the 2009 Toyota Avalon is at its best on the open highway. The cabin remains quiet, the ultra-smooth V6 engine has plenty of passing power and the suspension swallows up road imperfections without drama.
Car and Driver
Little more than a plus-sized Camry, the Avalon lures luxury aspirants with Toyota quality and Lexus-like serenity.
Road and Track
What’s Hot
- Lexus-Like Quality
- Smooth Powertrain
- Spacious Interior
What’s Not
- Yawn-generating style
- Pillow-soft Ride
- Conservative demeanor
Its seems like in all the reviews I’ve read everyone is playing up the roominess, quality, and smooth ride. Sure it’s not a sports machine, but I am not an indy driver. And if the worst thing people in the automotive industry have to say is it looks plain I’m okay with that.
What I Check Before I Buy a Used Car
After reading reviews of the model years I’m interested in I head over to MSN Autos and look for the reliability records. This is the Toyota Avalon Ratings done by MSN Autos. Across the board clear back to 1995 the Toyota Avalon appears to be one of the highest rated cars you can buy!

I like Toyota and have one but the one thing they aren't is sexy. Certainly reliable though which is more important in the long run.
Toyota has made a lot of changes to the Avalon to attract more consumers of all ages. The reality is the majority of accidents are not caused by seniors but by teens learning to drive. Insurance industry statistics bear this out.
Results revealed remarkable periodicities of occupant fatalities and fatality risk. While increased risk in the late evening-early morning hours is seen every day of the week, the most fatalities and risk occur during this period on the weekend, during the Friday night-Saturday morning and Saturday night-Sunday morning hours (Figure 1). But these periodic trends interact strongly with age and gender, whereby the most fatalities and risk involve young male motor vehicle occupants during late night-early morning hours, especially on weekends. The increased occupant fatality risk on weekends as compared to weekdays, which is highly amplified in young male occupants and strongly associated with late night-early morning hours, is also strongly associated with speed- and/or drunk driver-related accidents.
Toyota cars are considered the most reliable cars. If you hate going to mechanic then Toyota is the right choice for you. Plus design is great, performances are awesome...
Try googling transmission problems with the 5 speed
coupled to a 3.5 engine. So much for all the ratings
and polls.............

In the 15 year period from 1996 to present only 3 years 2001,2002,2003 were there any reports of engine problems across the model year. And the Transmissions are excellent in terms of reliablity across all years.
There is no perfect car, but you can not single out a model based on limited experiences. Can you name one vehicle over the past 15 years that on average has better reliability scores?

I have to say , the Toyota Avalon is driven by senior citizens who should probably surrender their right to drive.
