Is there any cure for asthma? What are the medicines? Describe a lifestyle for asthma patients.
54As far as I know, there is no cure as such for asthma. You can't for example prevent asthmatic attacks. You can only manage asthma, not cure asthma completely. Of course, in some people, asthmatic attacks cease on their own. Generally, these people are children who kind of outgrow asthma. I don't know how that happens. But, most people aren't that fortunate and have to live with asthma. It can be a very tough life living as an asthmatic. Only people who suffer from asthma really know how terrible the disease can be, especially the ones who suffer from acute and severe asthmatic attacks. An acute asthmatic attack feels like someone is choking you to death.
The causes of asthma can be many. Mostly, asthmatic attacks are caused by allergens. An allergen is an antigen that induces an allergic response from the body. Consequently, the respiratory tracts swell up and make breathing difficult. The most common allergen is the dust mite found in beds and pillows. Other allergens can be the pollens of various trees. Some people are also allergic to cat and dog dander. Mold is another allergen.
The medicines that asthmatics generally take are steroid and non-steroidal inhalers and nebulizers. These are good since they provide fast relief to the breathing difficulties experienced by asthmatics. Non-steroidal inhalers aren't as effective as steroidal ones, as the anti-inflammatory effects aren't as good. If you are using a non-steroidal inhaler, you generally need to use it even when you are not wheezing. However, during an asthmatic attack, you'd be better off using a steroidal inhaler or any airway opening medication, preferably as an injectable. These medications are also referred to as bronchodilators. The most common medication used in treating asthma is salbutamol, also referred to as albuterol and Proventil.
If any asthmatic knows what triggers his/her asthma, they would do well to adjust their lifestyle accordingly. If for example, they are allergic to cat and dog dander, it doesn't make sense to have them as pets. You may of course but its not recommended. Perhaps, you can keep the pets outdoors most of the times. Also, you'd do well to change your bed covers and pillow covers often and to vacuum regularly. Also, vacuum your carpets, if any. In fact knowing what triggers your asthma and avoiding those allergens/triggers is the best way of preventing asthmatic attacks. That's as close to curing asthma as you can get.
