Dogs have a long and honored history of being involved in politics. 25 United States Presidents have owned dogs, beginning with President George Washington who owned ten hounds. It is likely that two Briards (members of the sheep dog family), owned by Thomas Jefferson, were the first dogs to officially take up residence in the White House. Dogs are not the only animals to have lived at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Records show that the White House has been home to cats, birds, horses and even alligators and tigers. Currently, two Scottish Terriers named Barney and Miss Beazley reside at the White House.
