Is your life in the dumps?
59Is your life in the dumps?
If your personal and professional situation is gettting you down, I suggest a few simple ways to get back in control.
EAT SMART:
There's a connection between the mind and body. A healthy diet not only fills you up, but also makes you feel better. Consume lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains that will improve your health and lift your mood. Studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B-12 may help ease mood changes. Fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel contain omega-3 fatty acids. So do flaxseed, nuts, and dark green vegetables, which make for a healthy choice. If you don't like to eat them plain, mix them with your favourite foods.
GO SLOW ON THE CAFFEINE:
Consuming excessive caffeine in the form of coffee or even cola drinks can make you anxious and jittery. Cutting back on sodas, strong teas and even chocolate can make a big difference to your mood. It will also ensure you get better sleep at night.
TREAT YOUR PROBLEMS:
Are you suffering from aches and pains? Chronic pain can cause depression and this in turn will make your situation worse. Stop avoiding those nagging pains and pay a visit to your doctor today. Once you get treated, you will automatically feel better.
MAKE TIME FOR RELAXATION:
Stress and anxiety can make you feel more depressed. Learn to mentally relax, this will help restore a sense of calm and control. Try your hand at yoga or meditation. Listening to soothing music for 15-20 minutes everyday also helps.
WORK OUT:
Research has shown that exercise can work as well or even better than antidepressants. And you don't have to be a pro. Start by going for a walk with a friend. Then change your routine a little. Either hit the gym or try aerobics classes. You'll feel better physically, sleep better at night, and eat well. Try riding a bike, playing tennis or swimming. Make sure you pick something you like. The change in environment, coupled with the physical activity will do wonders for your mind and body.
TAKE UP A CAUSE:
Being involved with others can help you gain a sense of purpose in life. It's not necessary to quit your current job and take up a cause full-time. Devote a couple of hours each week to teach street children or volunteer at a charity sale. It doesn't take much effort to get started. Meeting new people and doing new things will help you feel good about yourself.
GET CREATIVE:
Whether you prefer painting, photography, adventure sports, trekking or simply writing a blog, it's good to find ways to express yourself. The goal isn't create a masterpiece, but to enjoy.
