Prince William

I never was a Royal fan. Queen Elizabeth? King George? Prince Phillip? who cared? They all seemed to be older, out of touch with regular folks and placed high in a tower for all to see, but not touch. What fun is that? Sometimes, people want to see their leaders as we see ourselves. Wearing sneakers, jeans and taking in a football game or some other "regular event".

Forget it, Prince Charles favors his scottish kilt and plays the occasional polo and that is about it. Then, he did something daring and caught the world's collective eye: He courted and married a beautiful commoner by the name of Diana Spencer. There was much speculation that Charles shouldn't marry her because she would dilute the royal blood line.

If you ask me, judging from the royal's blood line mug shots, it could stand to be diluted. So Prince Charles married her and they soon conceived 2 sons with the oldest being Prince William.

I still remember to this day seeing the news late at night announcing the birth of Prince William. Who knew that he would grow up to be so gorgeous? It's as if Princess Diana didn't have any help in creating her first born!

Through the years, we all watched Wills grow up and become a thoughtful and articulate young man. But what is different in this royal family now that the Princes are here?

Prince William is the "everybody's future king". He not only wears jeans, but he goes to rock concerts, dates and goes out pubbing. He's normal even though he has been kept away from the throngs of adoring fans. And, when the time comes for Prince Charles to step up to the throne, I sense there will be a huge reaction from the Brits demanding that Wills be put onto the throne instead.

Perhaps there is something that the royals can learn from all of this. People don't want people in power to be unapproachable. They want someone they can relate to. They want someone to be a regular "Joe".

It's sort of like when candidates run for President in the United States. Most are priviledged and wealthy, yet they do the best they can to provide an image of being a middle class bloke. It's almost humorous if it weren't so sad. There is something different though between the young generation of the royal family and our Presidential system. Americans have come to grips with the idea that instead of voting for the better candidate, it comes down to who is a lesser evil? We've become pretty jaded in our political views but something about seeing young men in the prime of their lives gives people hope.

Especially judging that they are Princess Diana's sons. It was apparent that she would instill a sense of duty to help others and work side by side people instead of looking on from their ivory towers. I never really agreed with the term or idea of "royalty" but I almost wish that America had a young family of royals. Maybe then, I would have more hope for this country. I look to our neighbors across the pond and smile as they are enjoying a resurgence in hope.

So, when the time comes, I say Prince William should leapfrog to the throne of King. I think he's ready.

I know that because his mother was just like us and he is just like his mother.
