Is The Neti Pot Any Good?

If It's Good Enough For Oprah...

Okay, I'll admit it - even though I think Oprah sometimes goes way overboard, there are definitely episodes that make me get up and go to a store. An episode back in May was such an instance. She had her new resident guru, Dr. Oz, on and he was talking about various ways to get healthier using natural methods. I actually tried three of his suggestions, one of which was the Neti pot. Let me tell you all about it!

What is the Neti Pot?

Basically, the Neti pot looks like a "genie's lamp" from movies like Aladdin, for example. It could also look like something you would use to water your plants. What it does is naturally cleanse your nasal cavities without the use of chemicals or medications. Really, the Neti pot just uses salty, warm water. I've heard that distilled water is best, which is what I use and making sure the water is warm leads to a much more enjoyable experience.

Using the Neti Pot

The woman in the picture was picked from the audience on the Oprah Winfrey Show. She said that she suffered regularly with sinus problems. Admittedly, I was grossed out by how it looks but I was also really intrigued: I wanted to know if it would work for me.

I had all but forgotten about it until, driving home, I noticed a huge advertisement outside of my local pharmacy. I went in and bought one (along with distilled water) and I came home to try it. I used cool water at first and it was okay but the warm water feels better.

The basic technique is that you must insert the spout into one of your nostrils (for most people it will be your right nostril) and then in one motion, turn your head to the side until your left ear is parallel with the sink (please do this over a sink!!!). There will be a few seconds delay and then water will begin pouring out of the free nostril. Take it easy, breath through your mouth (it sounds so obvious but it's easy to forget) and let the water pour until it runs out. Blow your nose (several times for me) and go on with your life! It's that easy!

I definitely feel an improvement after I've used the Neti pot. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the moisture to evaporate and when it does, my nose feels so clean and clear! I live in a really dusty city and I can't believe how stuffy (along with my allergies) that makes me feel. The Neti pot is a great, drug-free solution. Give it a try!!!

I always get a slight burning feeling from the neti pot but it's not that much different than getting water up your nose in the swimming pool. I would highly recommend doing this for anyone who works in places where the air quality is bad, like garages, warehouses, or construction sites.

I've tried a neti pot. It clears my sinuses like nothing else. I did notice that when I first started using it I had one of my worst colds ever. I don't know if that was because I was breathing better for the first time in years and was more open to the germs. I haven't had any problems like burning or anything while using it.

I have always been intrigued with the neti pot ever since I saw it in the Oprah show with Dr. Oz. I have a lot of friends suffering from sinusitis and I feel that this may relieve them of their discomforts. My problem is that there is no available Neti Pots here in the Philippines.I wish it would be available here soon.

One of my co-workers started using the neti pot months ago. We both suffer from chronic sinus and respiratory illness. She hasn't been sick since she started using hers.

I started getting a cold last night. I usually can't sleep the first night I have a cold and end up feeling like dying the second day of a cold. I went to Whole Foods Market and bought a neti pot last night and used it as soon as I got home. Not only did I sleep last night, I didn't feel too horrible this morning when I woke up. I decided to do a neti treatment this morning, and I have been feeling OK today. I still have a cold, but I don't feel miserable like I usually would. Houston, seems to have a perpetual allergy season, so I think this neti pot thing is going to become a part of my daily routine.

Recently my doctor recommended Nasopure, a nasal irrigation system referred to as the modern neti. I have tried both the neti and Nasopure and have found Nasopure far superior. I dont have to bend and twist like the neti and Nasopure seems to give a much more effective flush because it uses self controlled pressure instead of gravity. The angled Nasopure bottle allows for you to stand straight up while using it. Also, the salt packets that come with the product is much cheaper and seems more effective than that of the neti. I use one salt packet for about a week in the shower with Nasopure while the neti uses atleast one packet per use. Their website www.nasopure.com is very informative too and compares different nose washes on the market.
