Kitchen Island Range Hoods

When designing a kitchen or for that matter any room in the house there are many styles and fashions that come and go and that goes for the island range hoods. However, one of the features that is becoming more popular in the kitchen and has been in vogue for many years is the kitchen island. These often found in the traditional style of kitchen but more and more they are becoming more popular in modern kitchens made out of modern materials such as granite and stainless steel. They provide a more useful purpose than just as an extra work surface in the middle of the room. They can house kitchen appliances such as fridges and freezers which puts them near at hand when using the kitchen work top. One of the recent additions is to put the cooktop or hub along with a power supply into the island which gives them even more potential for use. As a result there is a requirement for ventilation air extraction above the hob.

Where To Buy

When looking for island kitchen range hoods, one of the best places to start is online. These will give you a good idea of the range of styles available but also the costs, from the comfort of your arm chair. Great bargains can also be found online. If you are going for a custom range hood it is worthwhile looking online and making a note of all the features and dimensions you require before approaching a manufacturer. Also seconds and reject models can be found on the internet at really bargain prices.

Island Air Extraction

The kitchen appliance that provides this extraction are the island range hoods. This piece of equipment removes the fumes and gases that are produce from the cooking of food. The question that often gets asked is why is this important? When cooking foods, oil is often used which when it gets hot produces fumes, gases a particulate matter such as microscopic particles of oil which are hydrocarbons. These are important because they can be readily inhaled by yourself or your family members which can aggravate or irritate the airways in the lungs. As a result, respiratory disorders can develop and they can aggravate the airways of people with pre-existing respiratory diseases such as asthma. Therefore. it is important that they are removed from the circulating kitchen air.

One of the the biggest problems of an island hood compared to their wall mounted counterparts is the issue of ventilation. With a wall mounted unit it is often easier to have a vented model with the extraction going through the adjacent external wall and into the open air. Unfortunately this cannot happen with a ceiling mounted island version. If a vented model is used the vent has to run above the ceiling to the nearest external wall. The ventilation system then needs access through the wall to the outside. This may be very difficult if you live in an apartment or flat and also it makes them trickier to install and will normally require a professional to do it which can increase the cost. The other option is to go for a ventless model. Like the wall mounted version, these units take the fumes and gases and pass them through filters. This has the effect of removing the particles and droplets such as oil. They work very efficiently but they require a little more maintenance. They need regular cleaning with an appropriate, safe detergent to remove the collected particles. This will help the unit work better and prolong its life and also reduce the need for maintenance.

Styles of Range Hoods

Island range hoods come in many different styles. One of my favorites, which can make a huge statement in the kitchen is the wooden range hood. These are often more suited to the traditional looking kitchen. However, there are many exotic woods available, which can give a stunning appearance in a modern kitchen. Sometimes they can be polished to a very high gloss. These will often have to be made to measure rather than buying off the shelf. As a result this can increase the costs of these units somewhat. But they can be a once in a lifetime purchase and can be an investment for your home. The wooden hood is also very popular in outdoor cooking ranges where they can give a very earthy, rustic look.

Modern kitchens often go for the stainless steel hoods which can give very sharp edged, crisp clinical looking appliances. These often match the stainless steel appliances such as fridges and freezers and other accessories nowadays found in the kitchen. They can often be bought ready made off the shelf and come in a number of standard sizes. They are often a lot cheaper than wooden models although some of the designer models can be very expensive.

A popular style in the traditional kitchen is the copper range hood. These are usually very expensive, heavy and have to be hand made to order. As they age, they can take on a wonderful patina and often look better as they get older. Again, like the wooden hoods they are popular in an outdoor setting
